Ather Energy is introducing Pothole Alerts through a phased over-the-air (OTA) software update for its Gen2 electric scooters, bringing a new level of rider safety and smart navigation. First showcased during Ather Community Day 2025, the feature uses connected vehicle intelligence to detect road hazards and alert riders before they reach them.
The rollout is currently available for eligible Gen2 models, including the Ather 450X, Ather 450 Apex, and Ather Rizta Z. The company says the feature has been developed using years of real-world riding data collected from its connected scooter fleet.
How Pothole+ Alerts work
The new system is built on crowd-sourced fleet intelligence rather than relying only on onboard sensors. As Ather scooters travel across city roads, their accelerometers, Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs), GPS modules, and onboard computing systems continuously record impact patterns caused by road irregularities.
This anonymous data is uploaded to cloud servers, where multiple reports from the same location are analyzed. Once several scooters confirm a hazard, the location is verified and added to Ather’s live road-quality database. This enables Ather Energy to introduce Pothole Alerts to provide reliable warnings based on real-world riding conditions.
Visual and audio warnings improve rider safety
When navigation is active, riders receive hazard notifications through multiple channels. Visual alerts appear directly on the scooter’s digital dashboard, while audio warnings are delivered through the scooter’s speakers, the Ather Halo Smart Helmet, or any connected Bluetooth headset. This allows riders to stay focused on the road without constantly looking at the display.
The system can identify deep potholes, broken road sections, uneven surfaces, and poorly designed or unexpected speed breakers, helping riders prepare in advance and reduce sudden braking or swerving.
Nine years of development behind the technology
Announcing the rollout, Ather Energy co-founder and CEO Tarun Mehta revealed that the technology took nearly nine years to develop. According to him, the biggest challenge was not creating the idea but building a sufficiently large connected fleet capable of generating millions of kilometres of reliable road data. That extensive dataset now powers the intelligence behind Ather Energy’s introduction of Pothole Alerts.
Compatible models and plans
The feature is currently supported on the Ather 450X, 450 Apex, and Rizta Z, while entry-level models such as the 450S and Rizta S are excluded because they lack the required connected hardware.
Looking ahead, Ather plans to expand the platform beyond hazard warnings. Future software updates aim to recommend the smoothest route instead of simply the fastest one, making everyday commuting safer and more comfortable. With Ather Energy introducing Pothole Alerts, the company is demonstrating how connected electric vehicles can use real-time fleet intelligence to improve both navigation and rider safety.
