Ford is preparing to redefine affordable electric mobility with an upcoming pickup truck that can also serve as a household backup power source. The American automaker has introduced an innovative bidirectional charging system designed to reduce the cost of powering homes using electric vehicle batteries. In a major development, Ford unveils Fathom EV with an integrated DC-to-AC inverter inside its advanced E-Box module, eliminating the need for a separate wall-mounted inverter.

Built on Ford’s Universal EV Platform, the electric pickup will start at $28,350 and is expected to reach the market in 2027, bringing advanced energy technology closer to mainstream buyers.

What Makes the Ford Fathom EV Special?

The Ford Fathom is an upcoming electric pickup featuring an onboard inverter that enables vehicle-to-home (V2H) charging. It can deliver more than a projected 10 kW of AC power for household backup, without requiring a separate external inverter. Additional Ford charging and safety equipment is still necessary.

Built-In Inverter Simplifies Home Charging

The technology behind the Fathom addresses a major limitation of conventional bidirectional charging systems.

Electric vehicle batteries store direct current (DC), while household appliances generally operate on alternating current (AC).

Ford integrates the conversion hardware directly into the truck’s E-Box, reducing equipment complexity and installation requirements.

Unlike earlier systems used with the F-150 Lightning, Fathom eliminates the separate wall-mounted inverter.

Two Major Bidirectional Charging Benefits

Ford’s new system offers two important functions:

  • Home Power Management: Charge the battery during cheaper off-peak electricity periods and use stored energy when electricity prices increase.
  • Home Backup Power: Supply electricity to household appliances during grid outages, reducing dependence on petrol or diesel generators.

Both features require compatible equipment, while electricity savings depend on local tariffs and usage patterns.

Ford Fathom EV Price and Hardware Costs

Ford Unveils Fathom EV with a starting MSRP of $28,350, excluding additional taxes and delivery-related charges.

Expected equipment expenses include:

  • Home Power Station: Approximately $650, nearly 50% cheaper than Ford’s previous bidirectional charger.
  • Home Backup System: Approximately $2,000–$2,100 for the Home Power Station and Backup Power Panel, around 60% cheaper than earlier equipment.
  • Installation: Professional electrical work, permits and associated expenses are additional.

These figures remain preliminary, with final equipment pricing yet to be confirmed.

Ford Partners With Utilities to Simplify Approvals

Ford has established a working group with PG&E, American Electric Power, Exelon, BC Hydro and Consumers Energy.

The initiative aims to simplify interconnection procedures, particularly for customers using grid-isolated emergency backup.

Grid-connected energy management may still require utility approval.

Launch Timeline and Market Competition

Production is planned for 2027 at Ford’s Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky, with pre-orders opening early that year.

The truck’s official driving range remains undisclosed.

As Ford Unveils Fathom EV technology, its affordability could intensify competition with electric-first manufacturers including Tesla and Rivian.

Ford’s strategy follows the discontinuation of its F-150 Lightning battery-electric pickup amid profitability challenges.

Why Ford Fathom Matters for EV Buyers

The announcement highlights a shift from promoting driving range alone toward demonstrating everyday energy benefits.

As Ford Unveils Fathom EV, its integrated inverter could make electric pickups more attractive to households seeking lower electricity bills and emergency backup power.

Actual savings and backup duration will depend on battery capacity, household consumption and electricity tariffs.
