Delhi is accelerating its transition towards cleaner transportation with an ambitious plan to expand public electric vehicle charging infrastructure. The government aims to strengthen charging accessibility for electric cars, two-wheelers, commercial fleets and heavy-duty trucks while addressing growing concerns over air pollution. In a major infrastructure push, Delhi targets 32062 EV charging points by December 2029, alongside dedicated high-capacity charging facilities for electric trucks.

The announcement follows the city’s early achievement of its 2026 charging infrastructure target. Supported by central subsidies and the Delhi EV Policy 2026, the initiative could significantly accelerate electric mobility adoption across India’s national capital.

What Is Delhi’s EV Charging Target?

Delhi plans to install 32,062 EV charging points by December 2029, including 10 dedicated electric truck charging stations equipped with 20 powerful 360kW chargers. The government has also secured ₹8.9 crore in central subsidies for truck charging infrastructure. Learn about the EV Charging Station Subsidy in Delhi.

Delhi Exceeds Its 2026 EV Charging Target

Delhi’s charging infrastructure has expanded considerably during 2026, exceeding government expectations.

According to official figures:

  • 14,225 charging points installed by September 30, 2026.
  • 5,312 new charging points added between January and September.
  • 13,913 charging points targeted by December 2026.
  • 32,062 charging points targeted by December 2029.

Earlier assessments submitted to the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) identified a shortage of 27,179 public charging points, with 8,998 available against a requirement of 36,177.

The latest expansion demonstrates significant progress towards closing this infrastructure gap. Learn about the Government Subsidy for EV Charging Station

₹8.9 Crore Subsidy Approved for Electric Truck Charging

A major highlight of the announcement involves heavy commercial vehicle electrification.

On October 23, 2026, the Ministry of Heavy Industries sanctioned ₹8.9 crore for developing 10 public electric truck charging stations.

These facilities will feature:

  • 20 heavy-duty CCS-II charging units.
  • 360kW charging capacity per unit.
  • Dedicated infrastructure for electric commercial trucks.

According to the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), medium- and heavy-duty trucks represent approximately 2–3% of India’s vehicles but contribute around 44–45% of road transport CO₂ emissions.

Electrifying freight transportation could therefore deliver substantial environmental benefits.

PM E-DRIVE Scheme Supports Charging Expansion

The central government has sanctioned ₹127.16 crore for 382 charging sites under the PM E-DRIVE scheme.

Of these, 180 locations have been reassessed as suitable for composite charging infrastructure supporting 12kW, 60kW and 120kW chargers.

Delhi submitted these site details on October 8, while tendering and technical approvals continue through Delhi Transco Limited.

Delhi EV Policy 2026: Important Registration Deadlines

The policy introduces phased electrification requirements:

  • January 1, 2027: Only electric three-wheelers and N1 goods carriers qualify for new registrations.
  • April 1, 2028: New two-wheeler registrations become electric-only.
  • By 2030: School bus fleets target 30% electrification.

Government departments and commercial delivery fleets are also transitioning away from conventional vehicles.

What This Means for Delhi’s EV Future

Power Minister Ashish Sood emphasized that charging infrastructure must expand alongside vehicle electrification.

As Delhi targets 32062 EV charging points, reliable public charging could improve convenience, support commercial operations and encourage wider EV adoption.

Ultimately, Delhi targets 32062 EV charging points as part of its broader strategy to reduce transport emissions and improve urban air quality. EV Subsidy in Delhi
