Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) is preparing a major domestic manufacturing expansion as competition intensifies across India’s passenger vehicle market. The automaker plans to increase annual output capability from 9.94 lakh vehicles to 11.40 lakh by 2030, alongside deeper domestic sourcing and a wider selection of SUVs and cleaner powertrains. At the centre of this strategy, Hyundai India’s production capacity is being strengthened to support domestic demand, exports and future electric vehicles. The announcement follows the launch of the petrol-powered Hyundai Bayon SUV and signals a broader push into affordable EVs, hybrid technology and more resilient, competitive Indian supply chains.

Hyundai India’s production capacity will reach 11.40 lakh vehicles annually by 2030, up from 9.94 lakh today. It also targets 92% Tier-1 component localisation by 2032 and plans a compact electric SUV during FY27.

Manufacturing Expansion: Key Numbers

Hyundai India’s production capacity will rise by 1.46 lakh vehicles annually. CEO Tarun Garg announced these targets at the Bayon launch.

  • Current annual capacity: 9.94 lakh vehicles.
  • 2030 annual target: 11.40 lakh vehicles.
  • Chennai factories: Two plants with combined capacity of 8.24 lakh vehicles annually.
  • Cumulative sales: 1.40 crore vehicles, including one crore domestically and 40 lakh exports.

India’s passenger vehicle market, estimated at 52.5 lakh units in 2026, has expanded from 3.7 lakh in 1998, when Hyundai sold 8,500 vehicles locally.

Localization Target: 92% by 2032

Hyundai currently achieves approximately 83% Tier-1 component localisation, supported by 200 Indian suppliers and more than 1,200 local components. Increasing this to 92% could reduce import dependence, improve cost competitiveness and protect production against international supply disruptions.

The strategy aligns with Hyundai Motor Group’s $15.5 billion India investment for 2026–2032, covering manufacturing, research, testing and suppliers.

Bayon SUV and Upcoming Electric Cars

Launched at ₹9.99 lakh (ex-showroom), the petrol-powered Bayon fills the space between Hyundai’s Venue and Creta. A CNG version is scheduled for January 2027. Manufactured in India, the SUV is intended for export to more than 50 markets, including Latin America, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific.

Hyundai also plans a mass-market compact electric SUV in FY27. Across its broader portfolio, 26 launches and updates are planned by FY2030, reflecting demand for SUVs, electrification and connected technology. AI-powered interfaces will also shape the ownership experience.

Why EVs Matter to Hyundai’s Growth

Hyundai expects EVs, hybrids and CNG vehicles together to contribute around 50% of its sales by 2030. Garg highlighted year-on-year growth of 29% in SUVs, 40% in CNG vehicles and 77% in EVs as key industry signals.

The midsize SUV market has grown from 1.1 lakh units in 2015 to an estimated 8.7 lakh in 2026, a 21% compound annual growth rate against approximately 6% for the overall passenger vehicle market.

By expanding Hyundai India Production Capacity, increasing localisation and introducing more affordable electric vehicles, the automaker aims to compete more effectively while reinforcing India’s position as a global automotive manufacturing hub.

These targets describe total vehicle capacity, not EV-only production; CNG and hybrid vehicles remain distinct from fully electric models.
