In a bold move to address a rapidly evolving challenge, Silverlake Automotive Invests in EV Fire-Fighting Training, launching the UK’s first Cobra Electric Vehicle Training Academy. With electric vehicles becoming increasingly common, traditional fire-fighting methods often struggle against the unique hazards of lithium-ion battery fires. This innovative initiative, developed in partnership with Cold Cut Systems UK, offers hands-on, real-world training that equips fire services with cutting-edge skills to safely manage and extinguish EV fires. Curious about how this groundbreaking academy is transforming fire safety and what it means for the future of emergency response? Read on to uncover the full story.
The academy aims to provide UK Fire & Rescue Services with vital, hands-on training to manage and extinguish electric vehicle fires safely—fires that are notably more complex than those involving conventional internal combustion engines. Leveraging Silverlake’s automotive recycling facilities, trainees gain practical experience in a real-world environment, enhancing their understanding of the unique risks associated with EV battery fires.
Central to the academy’s curriculum is the Cobra method, developed by Cold Cut Systems. This cutting-edge fire suppression system uses an abrasive water mist via a high-pressure handheld extinguisher to stop fire propagation in lithium-ion battery packs efficiently and safely. The method, developed in collaboration with leading car manufacturers, addresses a growing capability gap in thermal runaway management—areas where traditional fire-fighting techniques often fall short.
The launch, held on 27 November 2025 at Silverlake’s site between Southampton and Portsmouth, welcomed over 20 representatives from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue Service (HIOWFRS), other UK fire services, the Environment Agency, and aviation senior management. Attendees participated in both theoretical and practical training sessions, gaining insight into the operational application of the Cobra system.
Allen Prebble, Managing Director at Silverlake, emphasised the company’s commitment to innovation and safety: “As an automotive recycler responsible for end-of-life EVs, we are investing in solutions that mitigate risk. The Electric Vehicle Training Academy delivers unquestionable value to our fire services, and we are proud to offer our facilities for further training sessions in 2026.”

Rob Cole, Assistant Chief Fire Officer at HIOWFRS, highlighted the importance of such initiatives, noting, “Lithium-ion battery incidents are a clear and growing challenge across the UK. Collaboration with industry and training innovations like the Cobra system helps ensure firefighter and public safety in line with national guidance.”
Martin Orman, Managing Director of Cold Cut Systems UK, added, “Partnering with Silverlake allows us to develop an intrinsic understanding of EV fire risks and benchmark the Cobra method against other tactics to ensure safe and effective implementation.”
This pioneering academy demonstrates a proactive approach to evolving fire risks in the UK, offering firefighters the knowledge, skills, and confidence to manage electric vehicle fires safely and efficiently. With further training sessions planned for 2026, the initiative underscores Silverlake’s dedication to both innovation and public safety.
