India’s electric mobility story is entering an exciting new chapter as VinFast is set to expand its Tamil Nadu plant for EV buses and scooters, signalling a bold shift in the country’s EV manufacturing landscape. With a fresh $500 million investment and a strategic partnership with the Tamil Nadu government, the Vietnamese EV giant is gearing up to move beyond electric cars into mass mobility segments. This expansion not only strengthens VinFast’s footprint in India but also hints at faster adoption of cleaner transport across cities and highways. What does this mean for jobs, infrastructure, and India’s green future? Let’s explore.

As part of the agreement, VinFast will receive an additional 200 hectares of land in the SIPCOT Industrial Park near its existing facility in Thoothukudi. The current plant already spans about 160 hectares (around 400 acres) and is dedicated to the production of electric cars. With this expansion, VinFast aims to transform the site into a multi-product EV manufacturing hub.

The Tamil Nadu government will extend full support for the project by ensuring fast-tracked approvals and developing essential infrastructure such as power supply, water resources, internal roads, and waste management systems. VinFast will also be eligible for incentives under the state’s industrial policies. This collaboration is expected to significantly strengthen the local EV ecosystem.

Currently, VinFast’s Thoothukudi plant has an annual capacity of 50,000 vehicles, which is being scaled up to 1.5 lakh units per year. Once the expansion is completed, the facility will also manufacture electric buses and e-scooters, allowing VinFast to serve multiple segments of India’s fast-growing EV market.

The company believes Tamil Nadu will continue to serve as a strategic hub for its global expansion. The project is also expected to generate large-scale employment, boost local supply chains, and enhance skill development for the regional workforce.

VinFast currently offers two electric SUVs in India: the VF6 and the VF7. The VF6, priced from ₹16.49 lakh, features a 59.6kWh battery, produces 204hp and 310Nm, and offers a WLTP range of up to 480km. The VF7 starts at around ₹20.89 lakh and is available with both 2WD and AWD options, powered by a 70.8kWh battery, which delivers up to 350hp and 500 Nm in the AWD variant.

With the addition of electric buses and scooters, VinFast is positioning itself as a full-range EV manufacturer in India, directly supporting the country’s green mobility mission and Tamil Nadu’s ambition to become a leading EV manufacturing hub.
