Trade relations between China and Brazil reached an unprecedented milestone during the first half of 2026, highlighting the growing economic partnership between the two nations. China-Brazil Trade Hits Record as rising Chinese electric vehicle (EV) exports and increased Brazilian shipments of crude oil, beef, soybeans, and iron ore pushed bilateral trade to its highest level ever. The record-breaking performance reflects major shifts in global energy markets and changing trade dynamics.

China and Brazil Achieve Historic Trade Milestone

According to the Brazil-China Business Council (CEBC), Brazil exported goods worth $58.3 billion to China between January and June 2026, representing a 22% year-over-year increase. During the same period, Brazilian imports from China climbed 8% to $38.5 billion.

This pushed the total bilateral trade value to $96.8 billion, continuing the strong momentum established in 2025. China-Brazil Trade Hits Record as both countries strengthen economic ties across the energy, automotive, agriculture, and manufacturing sectors.

Chinese EV Exports Surge in Brazil

One of the biggest contributors to the trade boom was the remarkable increase in Chinese electric vehicle exports to Brazil. Higher domestic fuel prices, growing consumer interest in electric mobility, and expanding EV availability made Brazil the largest overseas destination for Chinese New Energy Vehicles (NEVs).

In a single month during the first half of 2026, Chinese EV exports to Brazil surged by an impressive 221% year over year, reflecting the country’s rapidly expanding electric mobility market. Along with EVs, China also exported electronic components, industrial equipment, and heavy machinery to Brazil.

Global Oil Market Shifts Boost Brazilian Exports

A major restructuring of global oil flows also played a critical role in the record trade performance. Geopolitical tensions involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran, along with disruptions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, prompted Chinese refiners to diversify crude oil supplies away from the Middle East.

Brazil emerged as a key alternative supplier, with crude oil exports to China reaching a record 1.6 million barrels per day (bpd). Besides oil, China maintained strong demand for Brazilian soybeans, beef, and iron ore, further strengthening export growth.

New Challenges Emerge Despite Record Growth

While China-Brazil trade hits a record, new trade regulations are reshaping the business environment.

Beginning July 1, 2026, Brazil will implement a 35% import tariff on Chinese electric vehicles to encourage local manufacturing and protect domestic automakers. The government also started phasing out tariff benefits for Semi-Knocked-Down (SKD) and Completely Knocked-Down (CKD) vehicle kits, encouraging companies such as BYD and Great Wall Motor to accelerate local production.

Meanwhile, Brazil exhausted its 1.1 million metric ton preferential beef export quota to China. Additional beef shipments are now subject to a 55% tariff, forcing Brazilian meat exporters to explore alternative international markets.

Outlook

Despite increasing protectionist measures, the long-term outlook for bilateral trade remains positive. Strong Chinese demand for Brazilian natural resources and agricultural products, combined with China’s leadership in electric vehicle manufacturing, continues to create new opportunities for both economies. As supply chains evolve and manufacturers localize production, China-Brazil Trade Hits Record is expected to remain a defining trend in global trade during 2026.
