Walmart Becomes an EV Charging Giant as it rapidly expands its proprietary public charging network across the United States. Once known primarily for hosting third-party charging providers, Walmart has now become one of the fastest-growing EV charging operators in the country. During the second quarter, its charging network expansion was surpassed only by Tesla, highlighting Walmart’s growing influence in America’s electric mobility ecosystem.
The company is strategically leveraging its unmatched retail footprint to make EV charging more accessible while creating new opportunities to increase customer visits and in-store spending.

Nationwide Store Network Creates a Competitive Advantage
One of Walmart’s biggest strengths is its nationwide presence. Around 90% of Americans live within 10 miles of a Walmart store, giving the company an ideal platform to deploy fast chargers without acquiring new land or building entirely new facilities.
The latest installations include four high-speed charging stations in Bentonville, Arkansas, including three near Walmart’s headquarters and one at the local airport. The expansion is particularly significant because Arkansas has traditionally lagged behind many states in EV adoption, making Walmart’s investment an important step toward improving charging accessibility.
400 kW Fast Chargers With Universal Compatibility
Every Walmart-owned charging station features advanced 400 kW DC fast chargers, allowing compatible electric vehicles to add substantial driving range in approximately 15 to 30 minutes. Each charger includes both NACS (Tesla-style) and CCS1 connectors, ensuring compatibility with nearly every modern electric vehicle.
The retailer is also offering charging prices below the national average, while Walmart+ members receive even lower rates, making public charging more affordable for frequent EV drivers.
Rapid Expansion Across the United States
Walmart Becomes an EV Charging Giant through an aggressive infrastructure rollout. Its in-house charging network has already expanded to more than 85 active locations with over 600 charging stalls across 17 U.S. states.
According to industry data, EV chargers are currently available at approximately 326 of Walmart’s 4,600 U.S. stores, while more than 300 additional charging stations are under construction. Standard locations average around 8.4 charging stalls, helping minimise waiting times during peak travel periods. The company also plans to significantly expand its charging footprint by 2030.
Why Walmart’s Strategy Is Disrupting the EV Market
Industry experts believe Walmart’s existing real estate gives it a major competitive edge over traditional charging companies. Instead of spending years securing land and utility approvals, Walmart simply integrates charging stations into its already busy retail locations.
Analysts say the strategy not only strengthens public charging infrastructure but also benefits Walmart’s core retail business. Since EV charging takes longer than refueling a petrol vehicle, customers often spend that waiting time shopping. Retail consultants estimate that charging facilities located next to stores can increase retail sales by around 5%, creating a win-win business model.
A Major Shift in America’s Charging Landscape
Despite slower EV sales following the expiry of federal incentives, the U.S. now has around 7.6 million plug-in vehicles on the road, and demand for reliable public charging continues to grow. Public fast chargers recorded approximately 16 million charging sessions in June, reflecting strong utilization across the country.
Walmart Becomes EV Charging Giant at a crucial moment for the industry, bringing affordable, high-speed charging to more communities while challenging established charging networks. As expansion continues, Walmart Becomes EV Charging Giant is becoming one of the defining stories shaping the future of EV infrastructure in the United States.
