In a significant step towards accelerating electric mobility in India, TN is to get 498 EV charging stations during the first phase of the Central Government’s PM E-Drive Scheme. The initiative aims to strengthen public charging infrastructure, reduce range anxiety among EV users, and support the growing adoption of electric vehicles across the country.
Government Approves Large-Scale Charging Network
The Ministry of Heavy Industries has approved the deployment of 4,874 public EV charging stations nationwide under a sanctioned investment of ₹503.86 crore. As part of this rollout, TN is to get 498 EV charging stations, making it one of the key beneficiaries of the national EV infrastructure expansion plan.

The Union Government has also earmarked a broader subsidy allocation of ₹2,000 crore under the PM E-Drive Scheme exclusively for the development of EV charging infrastructure across India.
Key Corridors Identified in Tamil Nadu
The charging stations will be strategically installed along major national highway corridors connecting Chennai, Nagercoil, Thoothukudi, and Bengaluru. These routes have been selected to support long-distance EV travel and ensure reliable charging access for both passenger and commercial vehicles.
Focus on Passenger and Freight Mobility
Out of 74 major routes identified across the country, 50 corridors have been prioritized for electric cars and buses, while 24 freight corridors have been earmarked for electric cargo vehicles and e-trucks. This move is expected to facilitate cleaner transportation and improve logistics efficiency.
Funding and Implementation
For Tamil Nadu’s first-phase deployment, the Centre has allocated ₹34.61 crore. The project will be implemented primarily through leading oil marketing companies, including IOCL, BPCL, and HPCL, along with state agencies.
With TN set to get 498 EV charging stations, the state is set to play a crucial role in India’s transition to sustainable mobility. The expanded charging network will enhance EV convenience, encourage adoption, and strengthen the country’s clean transportation ecosystem. As of TN to get 498 EV charging stations, EV users can look forward to improved accessibility and seamless intercity travel.
