What if Kerala became the next big hub for electric mobility in India? The vision is turning real with the State’s first EV industrial park set to rise in Vilappilsala, Thiruvananthapuram. Backed by the state government, this futuristic project promises to transform Kerala into a powerhouse of EV innovation, manufacturing, and research, fueling the state’s ambition to lead India’s sustainable transportation revolution. Curious to know how this project could redefine Kerala’s industrial future? Read on.
Strategic Location and Development Plan
The upcoming EV park will be built on a 23-acre site owned by the Trivandrum Engineering Science and Technology Research Park (TrEST). The location offers strong logistical advantages — it lies close to the proposed Kerala Technology University (KTU) headquarters and the planned outer ring road, ensuring excellent connectivity for research and industrial operations.
The project is being jointly implemented by the state government, Kerala Automobiles Ltd (KAL), and TrEST Research Park. Global consultancy firm Ernst & Young (EY) is preparing the detailed project report (DPR) and the master plan for the park, which are expected to be submitted to TrEST by the end of this month. Once approved by the state government, construction is scheduled to commence by January 2026.
Focus Areas and Facilities
The Vilappilsala EV Industrial Park will serve as a dedicated centre for research and development (R&D) and the manufacturing of high-value electric vehicle components. Key components to be produced include:
- Batteries
- Motors
- Controllers
- Charging systems
Beyond manufacturing, the park is envisioned as an incubation and innovation hub for EV startups, offering state-of-the-art facilities to foster new technologies and sustainable mobility solutions. This ecosystem approach will not only support industrial growth but also attract entrepreneurs, researchers, and investors to Kerala’s evolving EV landscape.
Timeline and Vision
According to officials, the park is expected to become operational by December 2025, marking a crucial milestone in Kerala’s journey toward green transportation. The collaboration between government bodies, academia, and private partners underscores the state’s commitment to promoting eco-friendly industrial development and reducing carbon emissions.
With the Vilappilsala EV Industrial Park, Kerala is poised to transform into a significant player in India’s electric mobility revolution—driving innovation, investment, and employment opportunities in the sustainable technology sector.
