HKELECTRIC-SS Launches Residential EV ToU Tariff Scheme to support the growing adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) while enhancing energy efficiency and grid management across Hong Kong Island. The new Residential Electric Vehicle Time-of-Use (ToU) Tariff Scheme officially came into effect on 1 June 2026, offering EV owners incentives to shift their vehicle charging to off-peak hours.

The initiative is designed to encourage smarter electricity consumption patterns by applying different electricity rates throughout the day. Customers who charge their EVs at residential car parks can apply for the program and receive rebates or incur additional charges depending on when electricity is consumed.

How the Residential EV ToU Tariff Scheme Works?

Under the new structure, electricity usage is divided into peak and off-peak periods. Higher rates are charged during peak demand hours, while discounted rates are offered during late-night and early-morning periods when overall electricity demand is lower. Weekend charging may also benefit from extended off-peak windows or special discounted rates.

By encouraging overnight charging, HKELECTRIC-SS launches a residential EV ToU Tariff Scheme with the goal of reducing pressure on the power grid during busy hours while helping EV owners lower their charging expenses.

Infrastructure Requirements for Participation

To join the scheme, households must install the necessary technology to accurately track EV charging usage. Key requirements include:

  • Smart meters capable of recording time-based electricity consumption.
  • Dedicated EV sub-meters to separate vehicle charging from regular household electricity use.
  • Advanced grid communication systems or smart charging solutions that can automatically schedule charging during lower-cost periods.

Supporting a Low-Carbon and Smart City Future

The launch of the program delivers multiple long-term benefits. It helps stabilize the electricity grid by shifting large energy loads away from peak periods, reduces charging costs for EV owners, and improves the integration of renewable energy resources into the power system.

As electric vehicle adoption continues to grow, HKELECTRIC-SS launches a residential EV ToU Tariff Scheme as a strategic step toward a cleaner, smarter, and more sustainable energy future. Industry observers believe the initiative will play a significant role in accelerating Hong Kong’s low-carbon transportation transition while improving overall grid efficiency. With this move, HKELECTRIC-SS launches a residential EV ToU Tariff Scheme as a model for intelligent energy management in modern urban environments.
