In a major push towards sustainable public transport, TGSRTC launches 60 new electric buses in Hyderabad under the state’s Green Challenge initiative. Telangana Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar flagged off the new electric buses at the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) Kukatpally depot on Wednesday.
The initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions, improve air quality, and strengthen eco-friendly urban mobility across Hyderabad. The newly added buses are expected to enhance passenger comfort while helping the city tackle rising pollution levels.
TGSRTC’s EV Fleet Continues to Grow
With the latest addition, TGSRTC launches 60 new electric buses in Hyderabad, taking the corporation’s total electric fleet strength to 1,050 buses out of the overall 10,139 buses currently operated by the transport corporation.
Out of the total EV fleet, around 540 electric buses are operating within Hyderabad city limits, including 90 air-conditioned electric buses. The minister announced that the government is preparing to introduce another 2,200 electric buses soon.
The state government has also set an ambitious target of operating nearly 3,000 electric buses by 2027 as part of its long-term clean mobility mission.
New Depot Planned in KPHB Area
Responding to public demand for improved transport infrastructure, the minister instructed officials to acquire a five-acre land parcel from the Housing Board for establishing a new depot in the Kukatpally Housing Board (KPHB) area.
Officials believe the new depot will support future expansion plans and improve operational efficiency for electric buses in western Hyderabad.
TGSRTC Merger Process to Start Soon
Alongside the EV expansion, TGSRTC launches 60 new electric buses in Hyderabad while also addressing a long-pending demand of RTC employees regarding the merger of TGSRTC with the Telangana government.
Minister Ponnam Prabhakar announced that the merger process will officially begin immediately after the completion of trade union recognition elections. A dedicated committee consisting of government officials and representatives from recognized unions will be formed to oversee the process.
The minister stated that the government will carefully study the challenges faced during the APSRTC merger process in neighboring Andhra Pradesh before implementing the transition in Telangana.
Employee Welfare and PRC Implementation
As part of employee welfare measures, the Transport Minister assured workers that Pay Revision Commission (PRC) recommendations would be implemented. He also directed depot and regional managers to conduct a grievance redressal meeting every second Tuesday of the month to directly address staff concerns.
With this latest development, TGSRTC launches 60 new electric buses in Hyderabad while simultaneously laying the groundwork for major structural reforms and a greener public transport future in Telangana.
