Ford Motor Company is reportedly evaluating an expansion of its Maraimalai Nagar facility near Chennai, potentially transforming it into an integrated electric-vehicle manufacturing centre for Asia-Pacific and export markets. According to people familiar with the discussions, the proposed Ford Chennai EV Hub could manufacture affordable electric vehicles alongside battery packs, cells, electric motors, and other critical powertrain components. Combining these operations could strengthen localization, lower costs, and help Ford build competitively priced EVs.

Brownfield Expansion Could Unlock Scale

Rather than constructing a new greenfield factory, Ford could repurpose and expand its Chennai complex through a brownfield programme. Chennai’s established automotive supply chain, skilled workforce, and port connectivity could make the facility a strategic export base.

Industry estimates suggest that an integrated EV and battery project may require ₹15,000 crore to ₹20,000 crore. Ford has neither confirmed this estimate nor announced funding for an electric-car assembly programme.

If approved, the project could rank alongside India’s largest emerging EV investments. Tata Group-owned Agratas is developing a 20 GWh battery-cell plant in Sanand with an initial ₹13,000 crore investment. VinFast, meanwhile, committed an initial $500 million to its Tamil Nadu facility, with scope to raise its total Indian investment to $2 billion.

What Ford Has Officially Confirmed

Ford maintains that its announced Chennai strategy remains unchanged. A company spokesperson said the facility would manufacture powertrains exclusively for exports, while details about the powertrain type and destination markets have not been disclosed.

In October 2025, Ford announced a ₹3,250 crore investment to restart production at Maraimalai Nagar. The export-focused powertrain programme is expected to create an annual capacity of approximately 2.35 lakh units. Therefore, reports about the Ford Chennai EV Hub represent a strategic possibility, not a confirmed manufacturing decision.

Ford’s Gradual India Comeback

Ford stopped local vehicle production in India in 2021 after years of weak sales. It subsequently sold its Sanand vehicle plant to Tata Motors but retained the Chennai factory.

The company signalled a possible return to Indian manufacturing in late 2024 by submitting a letter of intent to the Tamil Nadu government for export-oriented production. That move laid the groundwork for the confirmed powertrain revival and, potentially, a broader electric-mobility strategy.

Should the proposal proceed, the Ford Chennai EV Hub could give Ford an integrated, cost-efficient platform for affordable EVs while strengthening Tamil Nadu’s position in the global electric-vehicle supply chain.
