Maruti Suzuki is reportedly developing an entry-level electric car designed to make battery-powered mobility accessible to more Indian households. The Maruti Suzuki Affordable EV could be introduced within the next two years and will reportedly sit below the e-Vitara in the company’s electric vehicle portfolio.
Sources familiar with the project suggest an estimated ex-showroom price of ₹8.5 lakh to ₹10.5 lakh. At that level, it would challenge the Tata Tiago EV, MG Comet EV, and Hyundai’s upcoming affordable electric car in India’s competitive entry-level EV segment.

Dedicated electric platform planned
Instead of converting an existing petrol-powered model, Maruti Suzuki is expected to build the vehicle on a new architecture created for electric powertrains. This dedicated platform should allow better battery integration, efficient interior packaging, and greater control over manufacturing costs.
The Maruti Suzuki Affordable EV will reportedly be manufactured exclusively in India, following an approach similar to the e-Vitara. India is also expected to serve as the model’s export base, allowing the company to supply cost-focused electric cars to overseas markets.
Localisation could unlock aggressive pricing
A high proportion of locally sourced components and a compact battery pack are expected to support the proposed price target. Rather than chasing the extended driving ranges offered by premium electric SUVs, the Maruti Suzuki Affordable EV will likely prioritize urban usability, affordable ownership, and charging.
Its claimed driving range could be broadly similar to the Tata Tiago EV, which offers approximately 250-315 km per charge, depending on its battery and variant. This range should be practical for daily office journeys, school runs, and regular urban or suburban travel. A smaller battery could also reduce vehicle weight, charging time, and overall production cost.
Why Maruti’s budget EV could matter
Maruti Suzuki’s extensive dealership and service network could give the proposed model a major advantage among first-time EV buyers. Local manufacturing, competitive pricing, accessible maintenance, and low running costs could make electric ownership more practical for ordinary Indian families.
The Maruti Suzuki Affordable EV represents a strategic shift towards high-volume electrification. However, Maruti Suzuki has not officially confirmed the vehicle’s specifications, price, or launch schedule. If the company delivers the expected combination of practicality, range and affordability, its compact BEV could intensify India’s budget-electric-car battle and accelerate EV adoption across cities and smaller towns nationwide.
