BYD expands premium lineup with the introduction of the all-new Great Han flagship sedan, marking a significant step in the company’s strategy to strengthen its presence in the luxury electric vehicle segment. The Chinese automaker has officially revealed the first images of the premium D-class sedan, internally known as the Great Han or Han 9, through Lu Tian, General Manager of the Dynasty sales division.
The Great Han is expected to become one of the most important vehicles in BYD’s Dynasty series, targeting premium car buyers both in China and international markets. The sedan will serve as a sibling model to the upcoming Great Tang flagship SUV, with both vehicles designed to elevate BYD’s brand image beyond its traditional mass-market positioning.

Elegant Design Focused on Luxury and Space
The new sedan features a sophisticated and aerodynamic exterior design. Its elongated body and extended wheelbase provide enhanced interior space, while the fastback-style roofline creates a sleek and modern appearance. The front fascia adopts design elements from the Han L sedan, including a distinctive horizontal trim piece connecting the headlights.
At the rear, the Great Han features a redesigned bumper and a full-width LED taillight setup, giving the vehicle a premium and futuristic look. The model’s name was selected through a public voting campaign, where “Great Han” emerged as the preferred choice among six candidate names.
Premium Cabin with Advanced Technology
Inside, the Great Han is expected to offer a luxurious and technology-focused cabin. The interior shares design cues with the Great Tang SUV, featuring a premium dashboard layout, high-quality materials, and advanced digital connectivity features.
High-spec versions will include a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor that supports advanced intelligent driving assistance systems. These technologies enable full-scenario smart driving capabilities, reinforcing the vehicle’s position as a flagship offering.
Long-Range EV and Hybrid Powertrain Options
BYD expands its premium lineup by offering the Great Han in both pure electric and plug-in hybrid versions. The electric models will utilize BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery technology combined with a high-voltage architecture capable of megawatt-level ultra-fast charging.
Customers will have two primary configurations:
- Flagship Edition: All-wheel drive with LiDAR and an estimated range of 880 km.
- Exclusive Edition: Rear-wheel drive with LiDAR and an impressive driving range of 1,008 km.
These figures place the Great Han among the longest-range electric sedans currently under development.
Critical Launch for BYD’s Luxury Ambitions
The official launch is scheduled for the third quarter of the year. The success of the model is particularly important because BYD’s existing Han L sedan has struggled in the Chinese market, with April sales declining significantly year-over-year.
BYD expands its premium lineup at a crucial time as the company seeks to improve profitability amid intense market competition, ongoing price wars, and rising supply chain costs that affected first-quarter earnings.
Strong Sales Momentum Supports Future Growth
Despite profitability challenges, BYD’s overall sales performance is showing signs of recovery. The company recorded wholesale sales of 383,453 new energy vehicles in May, ending eight months of declining sales. Market sales reached 376,990 units, helping BYD maintain its leadership position in the new energy vehicle sector.
The positive response to the Great Tang SUV provides additional optimism for the Great Han. The SUV generated more than 30,000 orders within 24 hours of pre-sales and surpassed 100,000 pre-orders within two weeks. Sharing the same second-generation Blade Battery and 1,000V charging technology, the sedan is expected to benefit from similar consumer interest.
Overseas Expansion Driving Growth
One of the biggest contributors to BYD’s growth is its international business. Overseas sales reached a record 160,644 units in May, representing an impressive 80.4% increase compared to the previous year.
Factory upgrades to support production of the second-generation Blade Battery have also been completed, removing previous manufacturing bottlenecks. With production capacity improving and global demand increasing, BYD expands its premium lineup with the Great Han at a time when the company expects steady sales growth throughout the remainder of the year.
As BYD continues its transformation into a global automotive powerhouse, the Great Han flagship sedan could become a defining model in the brand’s push into the premium electric vehicle market.
