Telangana Shifts to Sustainable Transport gained significant momentum during the 2025–26 financial year, with the state registering 91,637 new electric vehicles (EVs). According to transport department data, EVs accounted for nearly 8.6% of the 10.62 lakh new vehicles added across Telangana during the year. This means that approximately one out of every 12 newly registered vehicles was electric, highlighting the state’s growing commitment to cleaner and greener mobility solutions.

The latest figures demonstrate a steady transformation in the transportation sector as consumers increasingly opt for sustainable alternatives to conventional fuel-powered vehicles.

Over 10 Lakh New Vehicles Added in a Year

Vehicle ownership in Telangana continued to expand at a rapid pace during 2025–26. The state recorded 10.62 lakh new vehicle registrations, averaging nearly 2,900 registrations every day.

The Hyderabad metropolitan region remained the driving force behind this growth. The Hyderabad district led the state with 197,539 new vehicle registrations, followed by the Rangareddy district with 187,044 registrations and the Medchal-Malkajgiri district with 175,630 registrations.

Together, these three districts accounted for more than half of Telangana’s total vehicle registrations, underlining the concentration of economic activity, urban expansion, and vehicle ownership in the Greater Hyderabad region.

Government Incentives Fuel EV Growth

A major factor behind the Telangana Shift to Sustainable Transport has been the state government’s proactive policy support for electric mobility.

During the financial year, Telangana continued offering a 100% exemption on road tax and registration fees for EVs, resulting in lifetime tax exemptions worth ₹2,769.81 crore. These incentives significantly reduce the upfront cost of EV ownership, making electric vehicles more attractive to consumers.

Officials also attribute the rise in EV adoption to increasing consumer awareness, a broader range of electric vehicle models, and improved charging infrastructure across the state.

Expanding EV Ecosystem and Public Transport Electrification

The Telangana Shift to Sustainable Transport is further supported by rapid ecosystem development. The state’s cumulative EV fleet has now crossed 2.8 lakh vehicles on the road, marking a major milestone in clean transportation.

Public transport electrification is also progressing steadily. Hyderabad currently operates 325 electric buses across six city depots, with plans to expand the fleet to 2,800 e-buses by 2027.

Meanwhile, charging infrastructure continues to improve. Charging network utilization has reportedly increased fourfold, supported by live monitoring systems and solar-integrated charging stations designed to lower charging costs.

Future Outlook for Sustainable Mobility

Industry partnerships and ecosystem-building efforts are expected to accelerate EV adoption further. Discussions with major automotive manufacturers, including BYD India, and special incentives for public employees are helping strengthen the state’s EV landscape.

With rising fuel prices, growing urbanisation, supportive government policies, and expanding infrastructure, the Telangana Shift to Sustainable Transport is emerging as a model for sustainable mobility. As electric vehicle adoption continues to rise, Telangana is positioning itself as one of India’s leading states in the transition toward cleaner, smarter, and environmentally responsible transportation.
