Nio Inc.’s mass-market electric vehicle brand Firefly delivered 5,663 electric vehicles worldwide in May 2026, achieving its second-highest monthly sales performance of the year. The latest results highlight the brand’s growing presence in the premium compact EV segment and demonstrate steady demand in both China and international markets. Firefly delivered 5.6k EVs globally in May, representing a 13.7% increase from the 4,980 units delivered in April. The figure also marked a remarkable 53.9% year-over-year increase compared with the same period last year, when the brand was still in the early stages of customer deliveries.

Rapid Growth Since Market Launch

Firefly officially began customer deliveries in China on April 19, 2025, following the launch of its first and currently only model—a premium compact hatchback developed at Nio’s Munich design center. The four-meter-long electric hatchback is positioned to compete with premium compact vehicles from brands such as Mini and Smart.

The strong May performance helped Firefly surpass 60,000 cumulative vehicle deliveries globally. Notably, the company added its most recent 10,000 deliveries in approximately two months, reflecting consistent growth and increasing customer acceptance.

Refreshed Hatchback Drives Demand

A key contributor to the sales increase was the refreshed Firefly hatchback, which officially launched on April 7. The updated model retained its existing pricing structure while introducing several notable enhancements.

The Freedom Edition starts at 119,800 yuan, while the Glow Edition is priced at 125,800 yuan. Customers opting for the Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) subscription model can purchase the vehicles at significantly lower upfront prices and pay a monthly battery subscription fee.

One of the most significant upgrades is a free over-the-air software enhancement that increases motor output from 105 kW to 120 kW, boosting performance without requiring hardware modifications. The update improves acceleration, reducing the vehicle’s 0-100 km/h sprint time to 7.9 seconds in Sport mode.

Software Enhancements Prepare for Future Battery Swapping

In May, Firefly introduced Aster 1.5.0, the fifth major software update since deliveries began. The update added battery swap station parking assistance, an important feature that prepares Firefly vehicles for compatibility with Nio’s upcoming fifth-generation battery swap stations.

Currently, Firefly remains the only Nio brand that cannot access the company’s extensive battery-swapping network due to differences in vehicle architecture. However, testing of fifth-generation station integration is already underway, with large-scale deployment expected in the coming months.

Strategic Role Within Nio Group

Within Nio Inc.’s total May deliveries of 37,705 vehicles, Firefly accounted for approximately 15% of overall volume. Across the first five months of 2026, the brand delivered 22,226 vehicles as part of the group’s total 150,526-unit sales.

According to company leadership, Firefly is expected to represent around 10% of Nio’s long-term sales mix, with annual volumes potentially reaching 100,000 units. Although current deliveries remain below that target, Firefly Delivers 5,663 EVs Globally in May demonstrates that the brand is steadily moving toward its growth objectives.

Outlook for 2026

The latest sales figures show that Firefly delivered 5,663 EVs globally in May while narrowing the gap with its previous monthly record. Supported by product upgrades, expanding software capabilities, and future battery-swapping compatibility, the brand is strengthening its position in the competitive compact EV segment.

As global demand for affordable premium electric vehicles continues to grow, Firefly Delivers 5663 EVs Globally in May serves as another indicator that the brand is gaining momentum and building a stronger foothold in the international EV market.
