In a major step towards cleaner urban transport and environmental conservation, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has introduced a 50 percent concession on parking fees for electric vehicles (EVs) across all NDMC-managed parking facilities. The policy came into effect on May 18, 2026, as part of a broader green mobility and energy-saving campaign led by NDMC Vice Chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal. The initiative, titled “NDMC offers 50% EV parking relief amid green push,” aims to encourage residents and commuters to adopt electric vehicles while reducing fuel consumption and vehicular pollution in the national capital, especially in the Lutyens’ Delhi area.
Major Push for Electric Mobility
The announcement of NDMC offering 50% EV parking relief amid the green push marks one of the civic body’s most ambitious sustainability efforts in recent years. Under the scheme, all electric vehicle owners using NDMC parking spaces will now receive a 50 percent discount on parking charges.
To further encourage eco-friendly transport, NDMC officials visited parking areas in Connaught Place along with BJP MP Manoj Tiwari, where flowers and chocolates were distributed to EV users as a symbolic gesture promoting electric mobility.
Officials stated that the initiative is intended to improve awareness about sustainable transportation, strengthen last-mile connectivity, and motivate citizens to actively participate in environmental protection.
Leaders Travel by Metro and E-Rickshaw
As part of the awareness campaign linked to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for fuel conservation and environmental protection, Kuljeet Singh Chahal and Manoj Tiwari traveled through public transport on Monday.
The leaders first used a shared e-rickshaw and later boarded the Delhi Metro from Sewa Teerth to Rajiv Chowk Metro Station. During the journey, they interacted with commuters and appreciated citizens who regularly use public transport to reduce traffic congestion, fuel use, and pollution.
Speaking to the media, Chahal said public transport, electric mobility, and energy conservation are crucial pillars for building a cleaner and more sustainable India. He stressed that environmental protection can become a successful people’s movement only through collective public participation.
NDMC’s Wider Sustainability Roadmap
The campaign goes far beyond discounted EV parking. Under the larger NDMC, which offers 50% EV parking relief amid a green push initiative, several additional measures have been introduced to reduce carbon emissions and fuel dependency.
Free Shuttle Services for Employees
Starting May 15, NDMC launched free shuttle bus services for employees to discourage the use of private fuel-powered vehicles. Initially, the service covers Sarojini Nagar, Laxmibai Nagar, Jor Bagh Road, and Chanakyapuri, with plans to extend the network to 14 more residential areas.
Mandatory Public Transport on Mondays
All NDMC department heads and officers have now been directed to use public transportation, including the Delhi Metro, every Monday as part of a fuel-saving and pollution-control campaign.
Ban on New Fuel-Based Official Vehicles
The civic body has also imposed a one-year freeze on the purchase of petrol, diesel, and CNG vehicles for official use. This move is expected to significantly reduce fossil fuel dependence within the administration.
Shared Mobility and E-Bike Promotion
To cut down unnecessary vehicle movement, field inspections will now be conducted using shared 16-seater vans instead of separate official cars. NDMC is also promoting its network of 51 e-bike stations with nearly 500 bicycles across the city.
In partnership with the Delhi Traffic Police, the council is working to improve last-mile connectivity through electric autos and e-rickshaws.
Hybrid Work and Digital Initiatives
As part of the broader NDMC, which offers 50% EV parking relief amid a green push campaign, the civic body is encouraging hybrid work practices to minimize unnecessary travel.
Up to 33 percent of Group B and Group C employees in selected departments may work from home on rotational duty schedules. Online meetings are being prioritized, while official foreign travel has been temporarily suspended to reduce carbon footprints and fuel consumption.
Delhi High Court Bar Association Extends Support
Later in the day, Chahal met members of the Delhi High Court Bar Association to discuss sustainable professional practices and digital work culture. The meeting included Senior Advocate and Association President N. Hariharan and Vice-President Sachin Puri.
Discussions focused on promoting EV-based carpooling, virtual meetings, and environmentally responsible workplace practices. The association extended its support to the initiative and pledged to encourage sustainable habits in both professional and daily life.
With the implementation of these wide-ranging reforms, NDMC offers 50% EV parking relief amid a green push, which is being seen as a major step toward building a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable urban environment in the capital.
