In a major step toward fuel conservation and eco-friendly mobility, Delhi Launches ‘Metro Monday’ under the broader “Mera Bharat, Mera Yogdan” campaign. The initiative encourages ministers, government officials, and citizens to use public transport at least once every week to reduce fuel consumption and support environmental sustainability.
Leading from the front, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta travelled by Metro from Kashmere Gate to ITO station and then boarded an electric feeder bus to reach the Delhi Secretariat. Several cabinet ministers also participated in the campaign by leaving behind their official vehicles and choosing public transport.
Ministers Support Eco-Friendly Commuting
Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa travelled from Rajouri Garden to Indraprastha Metro Station via the Delhi Metro and completed the journey to the Secretariat using an EV DEVI bus. Labor Minister Kapil Mishra and Education Minister Ashish Sood also joined the initiative.
The Delhi government stated that Delhi Launches ‘Metro Monday’ as part of a larger effort to reduce dependence on fuel-powered vehicles and encourage responsible mobility practices across the capital.
Inspired by PM Modi’s Energy Conservation Appeal
The campaign aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for energy conservation and responsible fuel usage amid rising global energy concerns. Ministers emphasised that conserving fuel is not only a symbolic step but also a collective national responsibility during challenging economic times.
According to Manjinder Singh Sirsa, the government has already reduced the use of official vehicles and increased online work practices to minimise unnecessary travel. He added that these measures are helping reduce fuel consumption while promoting efficient governance.
DMRC Adds More Metro Trips
To support the campaign, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation introduced 24 additional Metro trips on Mondays to manage the expected increase in passengers. Special EV DEV I buses have also been deployed to improve last-mile connectivity between Metro stations and the Delhi Secretariat.
EV Adoption Gets a Boost
As Delhi Launches ‘Metro Monday,’ the government is also strengthening its push for electric vehicles. Incentives such as reduced parking charges for EVs in areas like Connaught Place are being promoted to encourage cleaner transportation options.
Officials believe that wider use of Metro services, electric buses, and EVs can significantly lower pollution levels, reduce fuel imports, and build a more sustainable future for Delhi.
