Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, the Gujarat government has started preparing a comprehensive action plan to encourage electric mobility across the state. As part of this initiative, Gujarat set to revamp EV policy, has become one of the most significant developments in the state’s green transportation mission.
The government is now working on a revised Electric Vehicle policy that aims to strengthen the EV ecosystem, improve charging infrastructure, and increase the adoption of electric vehicles in both public and private sectors.
Departments Working Together on New EV Framework
Senior government officials revealed that multiple departments are coordinating to design a detailed and practical policy framework. The new strategy is expected to address the existing gaps in Gujarat’s EV ecosystem, particularly in charging accessibility and public awareness.
Minister of State for Forest, Environment, and Climate Change Pravin Mali confirmed that the government is actively working on policies to accelerate EV adoption. He stated that the state plans to gradually transition government department vehicles toward electric mobility in the coming years.
This move highlights how Gujarat, set to revamp its EV policy, is not limited to subsidies alone but also focuses on long-term sustainability and cleaner transportation systems.
Charging Infrastructure Becomes Top Priority
One of the biggest obstacles to EV growth in Gujarat has been the limited availability of charging stations. Recognizing this challenge, the state government is preparing a rapid rollout plan to expand public and commercial EV charging points across urban and semi-urban regions.
The earlier Gujarat State Electric Vehicle Policy 2021 had introduced incentives such as capital subsidies for setting up charging stations and exemptions from electricity duty. The revised policy is expected to build on these benefits while creating a stronger charging network throughout the state.
Officials believe that improving charging accessibility will significantly increase consumer confidence in electric vehicles. This is another reason why Gujarat, set to revamp EV policy, is being viewed as a major step toward sustainable mobility.
Congress Demands Higher Subsidies for EV Buyers
Meanwhile, the state unit of the Indian National Congress has urged the government to increase subsidies for EV purchases to accelerate adoption. Congress spokesperson Hiren Banker submitted a letter to the chief minister demanding additional incentives, especially for women buyers.
The party argued that stronger financial support and better charging infrastructure are necessary to make EVs more affordable and practical for the general public.
Gujarat’s Current EV Performance
Despite early initiatives, Gujarat still ranks behind many states in EV adoption. According to the India Electric Mobility Index:
- Gujarat ranks 16th overall in EV mobility
- 18th in charging infrastructure
- 27th in commercial EV adoption
- 15th in private EV adoption
- 12th in EV research and development
- 17th in EV purchase and operation promotion
With Gujarat set to revamp EV policy, the state now aims to improve these rankings and position itself as a stronger player in India’s rapidly growing electric mobility sector.
