Global automakers, including Hyundai, Ford and Stellantis, are exploring an unconventional solution to one of electric mobility’s biggest challenges: limited driving range. Instead of relying entirely on larger batteries, manufacturers want to install gasoline-powered generators inside electric vehicles. The technology, known as Extended-Range Electric Vehicles (EREVs), allows electric motors to drive the wheels while a small combustion engine generates additional electricity when needed. This emerging strategy aims to boost EV Range, reduce charging anxiety, and make electric SUVs and pickup trucks more practical for long-distance travel. Several manufacturers are now preparing new models as consumer demand continues to evolve.

How Can Gas Engines Increase EV Range?

Extended-Range Electric Vehicles (EREVs) use electric motors for propulsion and a gasoline engine to generate electricity. Unlike conventional hybrids, the engine does not directly power the wheels, helping drivers travel farther without frequent charging stops.

How Gas Engines Could Transform Electric Vehicles

The EREV concept combines electric driving with the convenience of gasoline refuelling. Drivers can charge the battery externally and use electric power for everyday journeys.

When battery energy runs low, the onboard generator produces electricity to support continued driving.

Key advantages include:

  • Smaller Batteries: Potentially lower battery costs and reduced vehicle weight.
  • Longer Range: Gas generators extend total driving distance.
  • Electric Driving: Motors exclusively power the wheels.
  • Simplified Drivetrain: No conventional multi-speed transmission is required.
  • Charging Flexibility: Drivers can refuel where charging stations are unavailable.

These benefits explain why manufacturers increasingly view EREVs as an alternative for larger vehicles.

Hyundai, Ford and Stellantis Accelerate EREV Plans

Major automakers are preparing different approaches to boost EV Range through gasoline-powered generators.

  • Hyundai: Plans to introduce the Santa Fe EREV in the first half of 2027, targeting more than 600 miles of total driving range.
  • Genesis: Developing a luxury EREV SUV targeting over 640 miles, with an early 2027 launch planned.
  • Stellantis: Preparing the Jeep Grand Wagoneer EREV and Ram 1500 REV pickup, previously called Ramcharger. Ram targets up to 690 miles.
  • Ford: Plans extended-range electric options for larger SUVs and trucks, potentially reducing dependence on enormous battery packs.

Reported launch delays mean several vehicles remain under development, and manufacturer-estimated ranges await real-world validation.

Is Extended-Range EV Technology Really New?

Although automakers are presenting EREVs as an emerging solution, the underlying concept has existed for years.

The BMW i3 REx demonstrated gasoline-assisted electric driving, while the Chevrolet Volt used a related range-extending system. Mazda also experimented with a rotary-engine generator in its MX-30 crossover.

China has already established a significant market for range-extended vehicles, encouraging global manufacturers to revisit the technology.

Can Gas Engines Solve EV Range Anxiety?

EREVs could Boost EV Range without requiring extremely large batteries, particularly in heavy SUVs and pickup trucks.

However, gasoline consumption, exhaust emissions, maintenance requirements and added mechanical complexity remain important disadvantages.

The technology could Boost EV Range while providing a practical transition between conventional hybrids and fully battery-electric vehicles.

Ultimately, its success will depend on vehicle pricing, efficiency, charging infrastructure and consumer acceptance.
