BYD has launched the Racco electric mini-car in Japan, making history as the first foreign automaker to introduce a dedicated model for the country’s highly competitive kei-car segment. Designed exclusively for Japan’s strict mini-car regulations, the Racco is expected to strengthen BYD’s presence in one of the world’s most challenging automotive markets while increasing brand recognition among local buyers.

Affordable Pricing Aims to Attract Japanese Buyers

The biggest highlight of the launch is its aggressive pricing strategy. The Racco starts at a suggested retail price of ¥1.95 million before taxes and government subsidies. After applicable incentives, the entry-level variant is priced below ¥2 million, a key price point that industry experts believe is crucial for attracting Japanese consumers considering an electric vehicle.

Although the Racco undercuts the Nissan Sakura in terms of list price, the Sakura may remain cheaper after subsidies because it qualifies for higher government incentives. Analysts believe BYD’s primary objective is not immediate profitability but building long-term brand awareness in Japan.

Compact Design with Practical Urban Performance

BYD has launched the Racco electric mini-car in Japan with specifications tailored specifically for city driving. Measuring 3,395 mm in length, 1,475 mm in width, and 1,800 mm in height, the compact EV is ideal for Japan’s narrow streets and crowded urban environments.

Power comes from a 64 hp (47 kW) front-wheel-drive electric motor producing 160 Nm of torque. Buyers can choose between a 22.4 kWh battery offering up to 210 km WLTC range or a larger 35.84 kWh battery delivering up to 320 km WLTC range.

The vehicle also features BYD’s Blade Battery technology and supports 50 kW DC fast charging, allowing the battery to recharge from 30% to 80% in just 15 minutes. Practical features include electric sliding rear doors, a tall-roof cabin, and folding rear seats that expand cargo capacity to 1,372 litres.

BYD Targets Japan’s Largest Vehicle Segment

Japan’s kei-car segment accounts for nearly one-third to 40% of all new vehicle sales, making it one of the country’s most important automotive categories. Traditionally dominated by Japanese manufacturers such as Honda, Suzuki, and Nissan, the segment has remained largely closed to foreign brands.

With this launch, BYD has launched the Racco electric mini-car in Japan to directly challenge established domestic rivals while expanding its global EV footprint. The company has set an ambitious target of securing 10,000 orders by the end of 2026.

Since entering Japan’s passenger car market in 2023, BYD has sold just over 7,400 vehicles by the end of 2025. To improve accessibility, the automaker is also expanding its retail network through specialized mini dealerships targeting regional and rural customers.

A Strategic Move in Japan’s EV Market

The launch of the Racco reflects the growing competition between Chinese and Japanese automakers in the global electric vehicle industry. As Chinese EV brands continue expanding internationally, Japan has become a key battleground for market share.

BYD has launched the Racco electric mini-car in Japan not only to compete with the Nissan Sakura but also to establish itself in a market where local manufacturers have long dominated. With competitive pricing, practical features, fast charging capabilities, and an expanding dealer network, the Racco could become an important milestone in BYD’s long-term growth strategy in Japan.
