The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a 20% discount on public EV charging tariffs between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm, encouraging EV users to charge their vehicles when solar energy production is at its highest. The initiative is designed to lower charging costs, increase the use of renewable energy, and accelerate the state’s transition toward sustainable transportation.
Affordable Charging with Solar Power
The new policy offers discounted charging exclusively through public EV charging infrastructure during designated solar hours. By aligning charging demand with peak solar power generation, the government aims to maximize the utilization of clean energy while reducing dependence on conventional electricity sources. Speaking about the initiative, Energy Minister Arvind Kumar Sharma said the tariff concession would encourage more people to switch to electric vehicles while supporting environmental conservation through higher renewable energy consumption. He also highlighted that Uttar Pradesh has not increased electricity tariffs for any consumer category for the seventh consecutive year, keeping power prices among the lowest in the country. The government remains committed to providing affordable, reliable, and uninterrupted electricity to households, farmers, businesses, and industries.
Renewable Energy Expansion Gains Momentum
Alongside the charging incentive, UP pushes EV adoption with a 20% tariff cut while significantly expanding its renewable energy capacity. Around 4,000 MW of solar power is under development through large solar parks, with an additional 2,500 MW expected from rooftop solar installations under the Prime Minister Surya Ghar Yojana. The state recently achieved a record peak electricity demand of 32,673 MW, reflecting growing energy requirements and improved power infrastructure.
Strengthening the State’s Energy Future
The government is also advancing thermal power projects in Mirzapur, Meja, and other locations while improving the efficiency of existing plants. The Plant Load Factor of older thermal stations has increased from approximately 65% to nearly 85%, boosting electricity generation.
