In a significant step toward promoting sustainable urban transport, Southern Railway rolls out an EV-battery swapping facility across 21 major suburban and MRTS stations in Chennai. This initiative is set to transform last-mile connectivity for thousands of daily commuters who rely on electric vehicles.

A Major Boost for Green Mobility

The move aligns with the Government of India’s broader vision of reducing carbon emissions and encouraging electric mobility. With Chennai’s suburban railway network catering to lakhs of passengers daily, the introduction of this service is expected to make eco-friendly travel more practical and efficient.

According to railway officials, Southern Railway rolls out an EV-battery swapping facility to reduce charging downtime and make electric vehicles more convenient for everyday use.

How the Battery-Swapping System Works

Unlike traditional EV charging, which can take hours, the battery-swapping model allows users to exchange discharged batteries for fully charged ones within minutes. This eliminates long waiting times and ensures uninterrupted travel.

The system will be operated by authorised Charge Point Operators (CPOs), and users can access the service through dedicated mobile applications. Payments and battery availability can also be managed digitally, making the process seamless.

Who Will Benefit?

The facility is primarily designed for electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers. It is expected to benefit a wide range of users, including:

  • Daily commuters
  • Delivery personnel
  • Students
  • Small business operators

By enabling faster turnaround times, Southern Railway rolls out an EV-battery swapping facility to support both personal and commercial mobility needs.

Strategic Locations Across Chennai

The battery-swapping stations are being installed at high-footfall areas to maximize accessibility. Key locations include the following:

  • Major hubs: Chennai Central, Chennai Egmore, Moore Market Complex
  • Suburban line stations: St. Thomas Mount, Pallavaram, Saidapet, Villivakkam
  • MRTS corridor: Velachery, Thiruvanmiyur, Taramani, Perungudi, Chintadripet, Mandaveli, Greenways Road, Kotturpuram
  • Other important stops: Korattur, Annanur, Washermanpet, Tiruvallikeni

These locations have been selected based on passenger demand and EV usage patterns.

Revenue and Implementation Model

Southern Railway has awarded 21 contracts for a period of five years to install and operate these facilities. The initiative is expected to generate an annual license fee revenue of ₹53.43 lakh.

Under the agreement, private operators will handle installation, operation, and maintenance, while the railway administration will provide space within the station premises. Notably, the infrastructure requires minimal space and will not disrupt passenger movement.

A Step Toward the Future

With urban mobility rapidly evolving, Southern Railway rolls out an EV-battery swapping facility as a forward-looking solution that combines convenience with sustainability. By addressing one of the biggest challenges of EV adoption—charging time—this initiative is poised to accelerate the shift toward cleaner transportation in Chennai.
