JSW Group is gearing up for a landmark entry into India’s passenger vehicle market, with plans to launch its own brand by December 2026. Already present in the Indian auto sector through its joint venture, JSW MG Motor India, the conglomerate is now preparing to create an independent homegrown automobile brand, signaling a bold step into the world’s third-largest car market. With this move, JSW is set to drive in its own car brand marks a new chapter in the group’s ambitious growth strategy.
At the World Hindu Economic Forum, JSW Group chairman Sajjan Jindal revealed that the company is actively lining up technology partnerships from countries including China, Germany, and the UK. The focus will be on hybrid and electric vehicles, under the newly formed arm, JSW Motors. “We are bringing the best technologies from all over the world… we are trying to work with the best technologies,” Jindal said, emphasizing that the first vehicle launch is planned for the third quarter of the next fiscal year.
JSW Motors will target the clean-fuel vehicle segment, competing with established players like Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Hyundai Motor India, and Maruti Suzuki. In parallel, the group is also finalizing partnerships for a lithium-ion battery venture in Nagpur, aiming for a capacity of 50 GWh. This initiative will power both passenger and commercial vehicles, further consolidating JSW’s push into sustainable mobility.
While the JSW MG Motor India JV, launched in 2023, continues to scale up with models like the Windsor EV, ZS EV, MG Comet, and MG Hector, the group is looking to increase its control in the venture. Indian investors, led by JSW, already hold a 51% stake, with plans to raise this further.
The overarching vision, as Jindal told the Financial Times, is clear: “Our idea is not to be an outpost of a Chinese company to sell products in India. We want to manufacture products in India, value-add in India, and sell in India.” This demonstrates the group’s commitment to an independent, India-focused automobile brand.
By combining global technology tie-ups, a strong EV and hybrid strategy, and a homegrown manufacturing approach, JSW, set to drive in its own car brand, is poised to make a significant impact on the Indian auto sector. With a December 2026 debut on the horizon, the automotive landscape in India could soon witness the rise of a major new player. Indeed, JSW’s decision to drive in its own car brand reflects the conglomerate’s ambition to shape the future of mobility in India.
