China’s EV Market in 2025: Small Cars, Big Numbers

The 2025 electric vehicle sales data from the China Passenger Car Association reveals a decisive shift in consumer preference. Geely Xingyuan tops China’s 2025 EV leaderboard at a time when affordability and practicality have overtaken premium positioning as the main drivers of demand. Total battery electric vehicle retail sales reached 7.877 million units in 2025, marking a strong 24.4% year-on-year growth and reinforcing China’s status as the world’s largest EV market.

The Rise of the Geely Galaxy Xingyuan

Launched only in October 2024, the Geely Galaxy Xingyuan delivered an extraordinary performance in its first full year. With annual sales of approximately 465,775 units, it overtook long-time leaders to claim the top spot. Geely Xingyuan tops China’s 2025 EV leaderboard largely due to its aggressive pricing, starting at RMB 69,800 for the 2025 model and dropping to RMB 65,800 for the newer 2026 version.

Positioned as an A0-class hatchback, the Xingyuan measures 4,135 mm in length, striking a balance between compact city-friendly dimensions and usable interior space. Buyers can choose between 310 km and 410 km range options, powered by LFP batteries from CATL, paired with an advanced 11-in-1 intelligent drive system and a Cell-to-Pack battery design.

Compact EVs Dominate the Rankings

The success of the Xingyuan reflects a broader trend. The SAIC-GM-Wuling Hongguang Mini EV secured second place with 435,599 units, while the Tesla Model Y slipped to third with 425,337 units, posting an 11.4% decline. The BYD Seagull followed in fourth place with over 310,000 units sold. In total, five small and compact EVs together crossed 1.5 million units, proving that easy parking, low charging costs, and accessible pricing matter most to urban buyers. This market reality clearly explains why Geely Xingyuan tops China’s 2025 EV leaderboard.

Technology Still Matters

While value leads the market, technology-focused models also performed strongly. Xiaomi’s SU7 finished fifth in its first full year with 258,164 units, Tesla Model 3 grew 13.3% to over 200,000 units, and Xpeng’s MONA M03 debuted in the top ten. These results show that smart features and advanced driver assistance remain key differentiators.

Broader Impact on Geely and the Industry

Driven by the Xingyuan’s runaway success, Geely’s total vehicle wholesales surged 66.4% in 2025 to nearly 2.1 million units, making it China’s second-largest automaker after BYD. The Galaxy sub-brand alone recorded over 100% annual growth. As competition intensifies and technology costs fall, Geely Xingyuan tops China’s 2025 EV leaderboard as a clear symbol of how affordable innovation is reshaping the future of electric mobility.
