Bhubaneswar Leads India’s EV Growth, as the Odisha capital has emerged as the country’s fastest-growing electric vehicle (EV) market, recording an impressive 84% year-on-year (YoY) growth in EV registrations and consumer interest between May 2025 and May 2026. The findings come from a recently released pan-India survey conducted by a leading Gurgaon-based auto-tech company, highlighting the rapid transformation of India’s electric mobility landscape.
The report ranks Bhubaneswar ahead of Gurugram (75%) and Jaipur (72%), while Agra, Patna, and Ludhiana also recorded annual EV growth exceeding 50%. The results indicate that Tier-II cities are becoming the primary force behind India’s accelerating EV adoption.

Tier-II Cities Are Driving India’s EV Growth
The report reveals that Tier-II and smaller cities are becoming the new engines of India’s EV revolution. Consumer search interest for electric vehicles in these cities is increasing nearly three times faster than in Tier-I cities, signaling a wider acceptance of sustainable transportation.
Another notable finding is the rise of an EV-first mindset among buyers. Over the past year, the number of consumers researching only electric vehicles increased by 60%, indicating that many buyers are now considering EVs before conventional petrol or diesel vehicles.
This trend further strengthens the position of Bhubaneswar as the fastest-growing EV market in the country, showcasing how regional cities are leading the transition toward cleaner mobility.
What Is Driving Bhubaneswar’s EV Boom?
Several factors have contributed to Bhubaneswar’s remarkable EV growth.
Strong Government Support
One of the biggest catalysts has been the implementation of the Odisha EV Policy 2.0, which offers attractive incentives, financial benefits, and road tax waivers for EV buyers. These supportive policies have encouraged both consumers and businesses to embrace electric mobility.
Expanding Charging Infrastructure
Although charging infrastructure is still developing across many emerging EV markets, Bhubaneswar has witnessed rapid expansion in public and private charging stations. The increasing availability of charging facilities at commercial centers, highways, and urban locations has significantly reduced range anxiety among buyers.
Rising Environmental Awareness
Growing awareness about environmental protection and the benefits of zero-emission transportation has also encouraged residents to switch to electric vehicles. Industry experts believe this combination of policy support, infrastructure development, and consumer awareness has accelerated EV adoption in the city.
Buyers Are Choosing Larger Electric SUVs
The survey also highlights a significant shift in consumer preferences.
Electric SUVs now account for 82.5% of total EV consideration, representing a 30.8% annual increase. Buyers are increasingly opting for feature-rich, spacious electric SUVs over smaller vehicles.
Meanwhile, hatchbacks account for only around 11% of total EV demand, indicating that consumers are prioritizing performance, comfort, and advanced technology when purchasing electric vehicles.
Fuel Prices and Ownership Costs Influence Buyers
The study found that rising petrol and diesel prices continue to influence purchasing decisions. During periods of higher fuel prices, EV purchase inquiries increased by 51% and remained 38% above normal levels even after fuel prices stabilized, suggesting sustained confidence in electric mobility.
Consumers are also paying closer attention to long-term ownership expenses. Searches related to EV mileage calculations surged by 242% in May 2026, demonstrating that buyers are carefully evaluating driving range, electricity costs, and overall savings before making a purchase.
This growing focus on affordability further reinforces why Bhubaneswar, the fastest-growing EV market in country, has become a benchmark for India’s evolving EV ecosystem.
Bhubaneswar Leads India’s Green Mobility Future
With an 84% annual growth, supportive government policies, expanding charging infrastructure, increasing environmental awareness, and changing consumer preferences, Bhubaneswar’s fast-growing EV market in the country has established itself as a national leader in electric mobility. As Tier-II cities continue driving EV adoption, Bhubaneswar’s success could serve as a model for sustainable transportation across India.
