Exciting news for electric vehicle enthusiasts and long-distance travelers—Bengaluru Highways get 149 EV Charging Stations, marking a major milestone in South India’s push toward green mobility. Imagine driving from Bengaluru to Pune, Hyderabad, Mysuru, or Chennai with confidence, knowing that reliable charging points are now strategically placed along these busy highways. Out of 236 planned stations, 149 are already installed, with 87 fully commissioned, thanks to the efforts of public-sector Oil Marketing Companies. But how ready is the network for the rapidly growing EV population, and what does this mean for future travel? Keep reading to find out.
Corridor-wise Deployment
The distribution of charging stations highlights Bengaluru’s central role in South India’s EV network:
- Bengaluru–Pune Highway (NH‑48): Leading the pack, this corridor has 109 planned stations, with 60 installed to date.
- Bengaluru–Hyderabad Highway (NH‑44): A total of 64 chargers are planned, of which 41 are installed and 23 commissioned.
- Bengaluru–Mysuru Expressway (NH‑275): Hosts 33 chargers, with 22 installed.
- Bengaluru–Chennai Expressway: Out of 30 planned stations, 26 have been installed, supporting smoother EV travel between the two cities.
The deployment underscores the government’s focus on building a robust EV infrastructure while allowing private firms to expand freely under the Ministry of Power’s 2024 guidelines, which classify EV charging as an unlicensed activity. This regulatory move encourages rapid growth of the charging network, helping meet the expected surge in EV adoption.

Grid Readiness and Future Planning
Officials have confirmed that India’s national transmission grid is ready to handle the growing electricity demand from EVs. Ongoing upgrades across regions ensure a reliable power supply, vital for long-distance EV travel.
In parallel, the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA) has released a report, India’s Priority Corridors for Zero-Emission Trucking, identifying ten routes, including Bengaluru–Chennai, suitable for early adoption of electric freight transport.
Karnataka Leads the EV Race
Karnataka currently boasts the highest number of public EV charging stations in India. Users can locate these chargers and monitor their availability through dedicated apps like ‘EV Mithra’ for BESCOM stations, enhancing convenience for EV owners.
With these strategic installations and supportive policies, South India is fast emerging as a hub for electric mobility, making long-distance travel easier, greener, and more accessible.
