The Odisha government has announced a significant step toward sustainable transportation with its plan titled “Odisha to Triple EV Infrastructure with 190 New Charging Stations.” This ambitious initiative is part of the central government’s PM E-DRIVE scheme and aims to accelerate electric vehicle (EV) adoption while addressing key concerns like range anxiety.
Strategic Rollout Across Key Cities
Under the Odisha to Triple EV Infrastructure with 190 New Charging Stations plan, the new charging network will be strategically developed across six major urban and economic hubs. These include Bhubaneswar and Cuttack—commonly known as the twin cities—along with Puri, a major tourism and religious destination. Industrial zones such as Angul and Kalinganagar, as well as the commercial center of Balasore, are also part of the expansion.

This targeted deployment is designed to create a robust “charging spine” that supports both daily city commutes and long-distance intercity travel, making EV usage more practical and reliable.
Collaboration and Execution Strategy
To ensure smooth implementation, the project will be executed in collaboration with Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL). The state transport department has already submitted its proposal to the Ministry of Heavy Industries. Senior officials, including Transport Secretary NBS Rajput and Commissioner Amitabh Thakur, are actively involved in coordination efforts.
Currently, BHEL is conducting detailed site surveys to assess technical feasibility before the project receives final approval. This systematic approach ensures high standards in infrastructure development.
Boost to PM E-DRIVE Vision
The Odisha to Triple EV Infrastructure with 190 New Charging Stations initiative aligns closely with the broader objectives of the PM Electric Drive Revolution (PM E-DRIVE) scheme, which has a total budget of ₹10,900 crore. Out of this, ₹2,000 crore is earmarked for public EV charging infrastructure.
With around 100 charging stations already operational in the state, this expansion will nearly triple Odisha’s EV infrastructure capacity. The Odisha to Triple EV Infrastructure with 190 New Charging Stations plan is expected to significantly strengthen the state’s transition toward cleaner, zero-emission mobility while boosting confidence among EV users.
