Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged Indian households to use rooftop solar electricity for cooking and charging electric vehicles, presenting clean energy as a way to reduce imported fuel dependence. Speaking at the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit in New Delhi on November 2, 2026, Modi linked household energy independence with national economic security amid disruptions in West Asia. His remarks placed Solar EV Charging in India at the center of a push to make renewable energy useful beyond conventional electricity consumption.

The government wants innovation that helps families power daily activities affordably while strengthening India’s resilience against volatile energy markets.

What Did PM Modi Announce?

Modi called for rooftop solar solutions that can power electric scooters, motorcycles, cars, and cooking appliances. He urged innovators to make solar electricity reliable year-round, potentially lowering household energy expenses and reliance on imported fuels.

Why Solar-Powered EV Charging Matters

Charging an EV with electricity generated at home could reduce running costs, particularly when daytime solar generation matches charging demand. However, actual savings depend on solar output, vehicle usage, system costs, electricity tariffs and grid arrangements.

Solar EV Charging in India could also support EV adoption, but overnight charging may require battery storage or grid electricity.

PM Surya Ghar: Key Numbers

Modi highlighted the rooftop solar program’s expansion:

  • Over 65 lakh households have joined the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.
  • Approximately one lakh homes are adopting solar every six days.
  • A cited study found electricity bills declined around 76%.
  • Some households earn from surplus electricity exported to the grid.

The scheme, launched in February 2024, targets one crore households. Its expansion could create more opportunities for home EV charging.

India’s Renewable Energy Milestones

India crossed 300 GW of non-fossil installed electricity capacity in 2026. It achieved a 50% non-fossil share of installed power capacity five years early, but its 500 GW capacity target remains scheduled for 2030.

Modi proposed adding another 500 GW over the following decade and highlighted domestic solar manufacturing, grid integration and battery storage needs.

Beyond Homes: Farms and Public Buildings

The Prime Minister encouraged solar installations on unused farmland and field boundaries, alongside equipment for dairies, fodder preparation and harvesting. He cited solar irrigation benefits for over 30 lakh farmers under PM-KUSUM.

More than 44,000 government buildings have adopted solar power, generating estimated annual savings of ₹700 crore. Modi urged wider deployment across schools, hospitals and public facilities.

Innovation, Investment and Energy Security

Modi challenged startups, IITs and entrepreneurs to develop all-weather systems for household power and clean cooking. He also highlighted domestic manufacturing, grid upgrades, green hydrogen and investment opportunities, including an estimated $220 billion funding requirement through 2030.

For EV owners, Solar EV Charging in India represents a potential shift towards cheaper, cleaner home charging. As rooftop deployment expands, Solar EV Charging in India could become an important part of the country’s energy security strategy.
