Meghalaya is preparing to strengthen electric vehicle infrastructure with a new fast-charging facility in Cherrapunjee, also known as Sohra, scheduled to become operational in November 2026. Guwahati-based startup A Plus Charge is developing the station to support cleaner road travel across the Northeast. The upcoming Meghalaya EV Charging Station will serve tourists, daily commuters and electric vehicle owners travelling through the busy Guwahati–Shillong–Cherrapunjee corridor.

The project follows the launch of a charging facility in Shillong and forms part of a wider regional highway network intended to reduce charging uncertainty, improve regional connectivity and encourage electric mobility across challenging terrain.

A Plus Charge plans to open a DC fast charger in Cherrapunjee in November 2026 under its Northeast Electric Vehicle Highway programme. The site will complement its operational Shillong station; technical specifications and opening date remain unconfirmed.

Cherrapunjee Joins the NEEV Highway Network

The Meghalaya EV Charging Station forms part of Phase 2 of the Northeast Electric Vehicle Highway (NEEV) initiative, focused on the Guwahati–Shillong–Cherrapunjee route.

The facility could make electric road trips easier, although travellers should verify its opening before relying on it.

NEEV Phase 1 covers the Siliguri–Tinsukia corridor, while Phase 2 aims to improve access towards Cherrapunjee.

10 Stations Added, 28 More in Pipeline

A Plus Charge has reported substantial expansion across Northeast India:

  • 10 charging stations commissioned in recent months.
  • 28 additional sites ready for deployment or under construction.
  • Existing network locations: Siliguri, Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Shillong and Agartala.
  • Planned expansion: Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram, including Dimapur, Itanagar and Aizawl.

The company’s charging network serves electric two-wheelers, cars and buses, subject to connector compatibility.

Local Businesses Can Own Charging Stations

Unlike a centrally owned network, A Plus Charge encourages hotels, restaurants, highway stops and property owners to invest in chargers on their premises.

The company then handles day-to-day operations and maintenance, allowing participating hosts to generate charging revenue.

Founder Samyak Jain believes involving existing highway businesses will accelerate regional EV infrastructure development. This could benefit tourism businesses.

EV Policy and Government Support

The Meghalaya EV Charging Station announcement coincides with Meghalaya’s newly notified Electric Vehicle Policy 2026, which seeks to promote charging infrastructure, private investment and cleaner transport.

A Plus Charge has highlighted the central government’s PM E-DRIVE support, citing an 80% charger capital-expenditure subsidy. Such assistance depends on applicable eligibility, approvals, and feasibility assessments; it is not an automatic payment to every private station owner.

Ambitious 2030 Charging Target

Founded in Guwahati by Samyak Jain, A Plus Charge operates as a charge point operator in Assam, Meghalaya and Tripura. It belongs to clean energy company AlternatEV.

The company aims to build 1,000 public DC charging stations by 2030 and has expressed its ambition to reach 50% EV penetration across the region.

If delivered as planned, the Meghalaya EV Charging Station in Cherrapunjee will be another practical step toward connecting Northeast India’s cities, highways, and tourist destinations with reliable electric mobility infrastructure during busy holiday periods.
