Hyundai reveals battery cells developed in-house that promise more than double the output of its previous high-nickel units and a 40% reduction in charging time. Announced at Hyundai Motor Company’s 2026 CEO Investor Day in Seoul, the breakthrough anchors a wider electrification plan targeting 5.55 million worldwide vehicle sales by 2030 and an operating margin above 9%.

EREVs to Receive New Cells First
The advanced cells will debut in Hyundai’s Extended Range Electric Vehicles, scheduled for the first half of 2027. These EREVs are expected to require less than half the battery capacity of comparable fully electric vehicles while offering equivalent battery performance and EV-like driving dynamics.
As Hyundai reveals battery cells for EREVs, it is also preparing mid-nickel NCM batteries for electric models launching in 2027. Hyundai claims this chemistry can lower battery costs by 30% without compromising real-world performance.
Smarter BMS, Longer Battery Life
A cloud-based battery management system will detect early cell abnormalities. Hyundai expects the upgrade to extend battery life by 20% by 2028. The technology could help address hidden cell-level imbalances, which testing recently found in roughly one out of every 85 used EVs, despite normal State of Health readings.
New Protection Against Thermal Runaway
Hyundai introduced Thermal Runaway Protection, or TRP, designed to stop heat from spreading between adjacent cells during a battery fire. Unlike systems that delay heat transfer, TRP combines heat dissipation with inter-cell barriers to block propagation at its source, regardless of battery type.
After more than 200 tests involving prismatic and pouch NCM batteries, TRP is set to make its debut in the Genesis GV90. Therefore, Hyundai reveals battery cells alongside safety systems intended to improve charging, durability, and consumer confidence.
Smart Charging and V2G Strategy Expands
The battery announcement follows Hyundai’s first vehicle-to-grid discharge using the ISO 15118-20 standard, completed with an IONIQ 9 and StarCharge Halo bidirectional DC charger. Hyundai says trusted standards are essential for V2G adoption among governments and energy providers.
Hyundai Motor Group has partnered with Kaluza to integrate smart charging into the myHyundai and Kia apps, beginning in the UK before Australia. Planned V2G services from 2027 could automatically charge vehicles when renewable energy is abundant and prices are lower.
Ultimately, Hyundai reveals battery cells as part of a battery roadmap built on its hybrid expertise, E-GMP platform, cloud diagnostics, safer packs, and software-managed energy services.
