BYD to launch the new “Great Seagull” EV hatchback in China later this year, expanding its Ocean series with a practical and technology-rich electric car. Zhang Zhuo, General Manager of BYD’s Ocean Network Sales Division, confirmed the launch during the Chengdu Auto Show 2026.

Positioned Between Seagull and Dolphin

The Great Seagull, locally called Da Hainiao, will sit between the existing Seagull and the sportier Dolphin. Although its tailgate carries the regular Seagull badge, BYD has clarified that it is a separate model rather than a next-generation replacement.

Its name follows BYD’s recent Great Tang and Great Han naming strategy. Once launched, the hatchback will compete against electric cars such as the Geely Xingyuan, known internationally as the E2 or EX2, and GAC Aion UT.

Dimensions and Exterior Details

BYD will launch the new “Great Seagull” EV hatchback with a length of 4,205 mm, a width of 1,810 mm, and a height of 1,570 mm. Its wheelbase measures 2,650 mm.

The upcoming EV is 425 mm longer than the existing Seagull and only 65 mm shorter than the Dolphin. It rides on 16-inch wheels fitted with 205/60 tires, while its kerb weight ranges from 1,180 kg to 1,255 kg.

Battery, Range and Performance

Power comes from a single electric motor producing 95 kW, equivalent to 127 hp. The vehicle can achieve a top speed of 150 km/h.

Buyers will reportedly receive two FinDreams LFP battery choices: 30 kWh and 39.2 kWh. These packs are expected to deliver between 320 km and 420 km of range under China’s CLTC testing cycle.

LiDAR-Based Assisted Driving

BYD is to launch the new “Great Seagull” EV hatchback with advanced driver-assistance technology. A green test vehicle was recently spotted with roof-mounted LiDAR, indicating the availability of BYD’s DiPilot 300, also called God’s Eye B.

The system supports Navigate on Autopilot functions on highways and urban roads. Earlier cabin images also revealed a floating infotainment screen, steering-column gear selector and spacious centre tunnel.

Market Positioning

BYD to launch the new “Great Seagull” EV hatchback as a more affordable and less powerful alternative to the Dolphin. It could potentially replace the Dolphin’s entry-level variant.

BYD delivered 8,879 Seagull units in China during July 2026, while Dolphin deliveries reached 13,910 units, highlighting strong demand in this important electric-hatchback segment.
