The Meghalaya Cabinet approved a new EV policy, 2026, to accelerate electric mobility across the state. Chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, the cabinet approved the updated policy to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles, reduce carbon emissions, and strengthen the state’s sustainable transportation ecosystem. The revised policy replaces the 2021 EV Policy, which completed its five-year term, while retaining several successful provisions and introducing fresh incentives for buyers.

Meghalaya Cabinet Offers New EV Policy with ₹25,000 Incentive

The Meghalaya Cabinet approved a new EV policy that provides a flat financial incentive of ₹25,000 to individuals purchasing eligible electric vehicles. In addition to the cash incentive, buyers will also receive a 100% waiver on vehicle registration fees, making EV ownership significantly more affordable.

The benefits are available across multiple vehicle categories, including electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and four-wheelers, ensuring wider public participation in the state’s transition to clean mobility.

Additional Benefits Under Vehicle Scrappage Policy

The government is also working to integrate the EV policy with Meghalaya’s vehicle scrappage programme introduced last year. Vehicle owners who scrap vehicles that are over 15 years old and submit a valid scrappage certificate issued by the Meghalaya Transport Department will qualify for additional incentives. The government has stated that the exact amount and structure of these top-up benefits will be announced separately.

This move aims to replace aging, high-emission vehicles with cleaner electric alternatives.

Charging Infrastructure to Expand Across Meghalaya

One of the major concerns surrounding EV adoption has been the availability of charging stations. Addressing this issue, the government confirmed that several strategic locations have already been identified for setting up commercial EV charging stations across the state.

The Meghalaya Cabinet offers a new EV policy with a strong focus on expanding charging infrastructure to reduce range anxiety and support the growing number of electric vehicles. The state is also pursuing the establishment of its first dedicated vehicle scrapping facility.

Other Key Decisions Taken by the Cabinet

Apart from approving the EV Policy 2026, the Meghalaya Cabinet cleared several important proposals. It approved ₹22.37 crore towards land compensation for a 6.5-km 132 kV transmission line connecting the Mawkhanu substation. The cabinet also renamed the New Shillong Township Development Agency as the New Shillong Development Authority (NSDA).

Additionally, the cabinet approved the creation of a Research Wing under the Border Areas Development Department and cleared amendments to the Meghalaya GST Act to align state regulations with the latest GST Council recommendations.

With these measures, the Meghalaya Cabinet offers a new EV policy that combines financial incentives, improved infrastructure, and long-term sustainability initiatives, reinforcing the state’s commitment to cleaner transportation and environmentally responsible development.
