India took a major leap toward cleaner mobility in 2025 by rapidly expanding its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas’ year-end review, the country added 27432 new charging stations at fuel retail outlets, significantly improving access to EV charging across urban and highway networks.
Government and OMCs Drive the Growth
This large-scale expansion was driven by a dual approach that combined government support with independent investments by oil marketing companies (OMCs). Under the FAME-II scheme, 8,932 charging stations were installed at petrol pumps nationwide. In parallel, public sector OMCs invested their own capital to deploy over 18,500 additional charging points. Together, these efforts resulted in 27432 new charging stations, primarily located at existing fuel outlets where motorists already stop regularly.

Strong National Network Expansion
By December 2025, India’s total public EV charging network across all sectors reached approximately 39,485 stations, up sharply from about 25,202 in December 2024. This expansion is playing a crucial role in encouraging EV adoption by reducing range anxiety and making charging more convenient for both two-wheelers and passenger cars.
Energy Stations and Highway Coverage
Public sector OMCs are also developing 4,000 integrated “Energy Stations” between 2024-25 and 2028-29. These stations are designed as multi-fuel hubs offering petrol, diesel, EV charging, biofuels, CNG, and LNG. As of November 1, 2025, 1,064 Energy Stations were already operational. Along highways, fast chargers were installed strategically, ensuring that 91% of national highways now have a fast charging point within every 50 km. These initiatives further strengthen the impact of 27432 new charging stations across the country.
Leading States in EV Charging
In late 2025, Karnataka emerged as the leader with 5,880 operational public charging stations, followed by Maharashtra (3,746), Uttar Pradesh (2,326), and Delhi (1,951). These states are setting benchmarks for EV readiness and clean transport adoption.
Beyond EVs: Cleaner and Safer Transport
The government also focused on trucker welfare through the APNA GHAR initiative, setting up over 500 rest areas to enhance road safety and employment. Biofuel progress was another highlight, with ethanol blending in petrol reaching 19.24%, delivering major foreign exchange savings and emission reductions. Strengthening digital payments, doorstep fuel delivery, and sanitation facilities at retail outlets complemented the rollout of 27432 new charging stations, marking 2025 as a milestone year for India’s sustainable transport future.
