Volkswagen Group is preparing for a major transformation of its Indian operations, with plans to introduce two locally assembled electric vehicles within the next two years. The German automotive giant is exploring a strategic partnership with JSW Group, potentially reshaping its manufacturing, investment, and electric mobility strategy. At the center of this expansion is the Volkswagen JSW EV Alliance, a proposed joint venture that would give JSW Group majority ownership.

The partnership aims to accelerate EV production, strengthen local sourcing, and expand Volkswagen’s presence in India’s competitive automotive market while targeting improved profitability and long-term growth by 2030.

What Is Volkswagen Planning in India?

Volkswagen plans to launch two locally assembled electric vehicles within two years through a proposed 51:49 partnership with JSW Group. The companies aim to finalize their agreement before mid-2027, focusing on EV manufacturing, localization, research, and dealership expansion.

Volkswagen and JSW Partnership: Key Highlights

  • Ownership: JSW Group 51%, Volkswagen Group 49%.
  • EV Launches: Two locally assembled electric vehicles planned.
  • Timeline: Binding agreement targeted before mid-2027.
  • Manufacturing: Facilities in Maharashtra and Gujarat under consideration.
  • Technology: India Main Platform adapted for domestic requirements.
  • Excluded Brands: Audi, Porsche, Lamborghini, and Bentley.

Volkswagen JSW EV Alliance to Accelerate Electric Mobility

The proposed partnership represents a significant strategic shift for Volkswagen’s Indian subsidiary, Å koda Auto Volkswagen India (SAVWIPL).

According to reports citing Å koda Auto acting CEO Holger Peters, the collaboration could accelerate investment, improve competitiveness, and support larger manufacturing operations.

Peters reportedly discussed these plans during a virtual employee town hall, highlighting opportunities for stronger localisation and product development.

Volkswagen has previously concentrated on petrol-powered models, including the Taigun, Virtus, Kushaq, and Slavia. Its mainstream electric vehicle expansion has faced delays exceeding two years.

The new strategy could help Volkswagen compete more effectively in India’s rapidly developing EV market.

Two Electric Cars Planned With Local Manufacturing

The Volkswagen JSW EV Alliance could introduce two battery-electric vehicles assembled in India, potentially reducing production costs through greater localization.

Both companies are evaluating existing manufacturing facilities rather than immediately establishing entirely new plants.

Potential production locations include:

  • Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra: JSW Motors manufacturing facility.
  • Halol, Gujarat: Existing JSW MG Motor manufacturing facility.

JSW Motors could undertake contract manufacturing for upcoming Volkswagen and Å koda electric vehicles.

The proposed India Main Platform (IMP), derived from Volkswagen’s China-focused architecture, could support future models while accommodating Indian regulations and supplier requirements.

Strategic Advantages and Expansion Plans

Unlike JSW’s separate partnership with SAIC Motor, the proposed Volkswagen collaboration would reportedly involve no Chinese equity participation.

This structure could simplify certain investment considerations and strengthen India’s potential role as an EV export hub.

The partnership would also cover purchasing, research and development, product launches, manufacturing expansion, and dealership growth.

Volkswagen aims to improve operational profitability across its Indian business by 2030.

Meanwhile, JSW Group is expanding its electric mobility portfolio through JSW Greentech and its Ampstar commercial vehicle brand, targeting electric trucks and buses.

What This Means for India’s EV Market

The Volkswagen JSW EV Alliance could strengthen domestic EV manufacturing while bringing additional competition to India’s electric passenger vehicle segment.

Greater localization, shared investments, and expanded production capabilities may improve affordability and accelerate electric vehicle adoption.

However, the agreement remains proposed, and specific vehicle models, prices, and launch dates have not been confirmed.
