The Indian electric vehicle market witnessed a notable shake-up in December 2025 as a new player outperformed established automotive giants. VinFast pulls ahead of Hyundai and Kia in monthly EV sales, marking a significant milestone for the Vietnamese automaker’s early journey in India.

December 2025 EV Sales Snapshot

According to December 2025 registration data, Tata Passenger Electric Mobility continued its dominance, leading the market with 6,434 units. JSW MG Motor India followed in second place with 3,555 units, while Mahindra Electric Automobile Ltd secured third position with 3,065 units.

VinFast Auto India Pvt Ltd emerged as the fourth highest-selling EV brand, registering around 375 units during the month. Although the gap between VinFast and Mahindra remains substantial, VinFast’s ability to outperform several legacy manufacturers stood out.

Beating Established Rivals

What makes this performance remarkable is that VinFast pulls ahead of Hyundai and Kia, two brands with a long-standing presence and strong dealer networks in India. Kia India sold approximately 313 units in December, placing it sixth overall, while Hyundai Motor India recorded around 262 units, slipping to seventh position.

Despite variations in reported figures—VinFast sales ranging between 321 and 375 units, Kia between 272 and 314 units, and Hyundai between 238 and 262 units—the rankings consistently place VinFast above both competitors. This confirms that VinFast pulls ahead of Hyundai and Kia across multiple data interpretations.

Limited Portfolio, Big Impact

VinFast achieved this milestone with a limited product lineup, which makes the performance even more impressive. The brand currently offers the VF6 and VF7 electric SUVs, launched just ahead of the festive season. These models are positioned as premium yet competitively priced offerings, appealing to urban buyers seeking modern design, advanced features, and a practical range.

Strategic Pricing and Market Positioning

The strong debut can largely be attributed to aggressive pricing, contemporary styling, and timely market entry. By launching close to the festive buying period, VinFast capitalized on heightened consumer interest in EVs. As a result, VinFast pulls ahead of Hyundai and Kia despite having fewer models and a newer brand identity in India.

What does this mean for the EV Market?

VinFast’s December performance signals intensifying competition in India’s EV space. It highlights how new-age manufacturers with focused strategies can disrupt established hierarchies. If the brand continues to expand its portfolio and charging ecosystem, VinFast pulls ahead of Hyundai and Kia, and may become a recurring headline rather than a one-month achievement.
