India’s electric vehicle (EV) industry is witnessing another major development as Sona Comstar’s Denso Deal Opens new opportunities in the electric and hybrid powertrain segment. The strategic partnership between Sona Comstar and Japanese automotive technology leader Denso is expected to strengthen the company’s presence across electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger vehicles, and commercial vehicles.

Jefferies’ View

Jefferies reiterated its Buy rating with a target price of ₹700. According to the brokerage, the partnership significantly expands Sona Comstar’s future growth opportunities. It also believes the timing is favorable as electric vehicle adoption is rapidly increasing across both two-wheelers and four-wheelers in the Indian market.

Citi’s View

Citi also maintained its Buy recommendation with a target price of ₹700. The brokerage noted that the two joint ventures strengthen Sona Comstar’s position in the EV powertrain business while expanding its presence in the passenger vehicle segment, where the company previously had relatively limited exposure.

What the Sona Comstar-Denso Partnership Includes

The agreement establishes two separate joint ventures focused on developing, designing, manufacturing, and marketing advanced electric and hybrid powertrain systems.

First Joint Venture

The first venture will develop high-voltage liquid-cooled traction inverters, traction motors, and generators for:

  • Electric passenger vehicles
  • Hybrid passenger vehicles
  • Commercial vehicles
  • Other high-voltage mobility applications

In this venture:

  • Denso will hold 51% ownership and management control.
  • Sona Comstar will own the remaining 49%.
Second Joint Venture

The second venture focuses on electric and hybrid two-wheelers and three-wheelers. It will manufacture:

  • Air-cooled traction inverters
  • Traction motors
  • Generators
  • e-Axles

Under this arrangement:

  • Sona Comstar will own 51% and retain management control.
  • Denso will acquire 49% at an enterprise value of ₹1,750 crore.

The transaction is currently subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.

He said the future of mobility will be shaped by companies that continuously invest in innovation, advanced product development, and industrialization of new technologies. Singh also praised Denso’s decades-long leadership in automotive innovation and electrification.

According to him, the collaboration combines the complementary strengths of both companies to develop advanced electric and hybrid powertrain solutions for four-wheelers and larger vehicle applications while also accelerating Sona Comstar’s existing two- and three-wheeler EV business by strengthening capabilities across the entire powertrain value chain.
