India’s Bajaj Auto deepens its electric vehicle (EV) strategy with ambitious plans to launch electric motorcycles by FY2028 while significantly expanding production of its popular Chetak electric scooter. Backed by record quarterly financial results and strong export growth, the company is aiming to strengthen its position in India’s rapidly expanding electric two-wheeler market.

Electric Motorcycles Set for FY2028 Launch

A major highlight of the company’s roadmap is the planned debut of its first electric motorcycles in fiscal year 2028. Bajaj Auto confirmed that advanced research and development is already underway to create a new generation of electric motorcycle platforms.

Unlike a conventional India-first launch, the company will initially introduce its electric motorcycles in international markets before bringing them to Indian customers. This strategy allows Bajaj Auto to leverage its extensive global distribution network and gather valuable market feedback before a domestic rollout.

The company also plans to capitalize on its long-standing partnerships with premium motorcycle brands such as KTM and Triumph. These collaborations are expected to strengthen the supply chain and accelerate the commercial viability of upcoming electric motorcycle models.

Chetak Production to Increase as Demand Surges

India’s Bajaj Auto deepens its commitment to electric mobility by rapidly expanding production capacity for the Chetak electric scooter. According to Chief Financial Officer Dinesh Thapar, customer demand has consistently exceeded supply during the latest quarter.

To address the shortage, Bajaj Auto will increase Chetak manufacturing capacity from 50,000 units per month to 60,000 units in the coming months. The expansion is expected to improve product availability while supporting the company’s goal of becoming India’s leading electric scooter manufacturer.

The Chetak portfolio has also been reorganized into three distinct product families—the affordable C25 series, the mid-range C30 lineup, and the premium C35 models—allowing the brand to serve a wider range of buyers.

Strong Financial Performance Fuels Expansion

The aggressive EV investment follows one of Bajaj Auto’s strongest financial quarters. The company reported a 42.3% increase in first-quarter net profit to ₹29.83 billion, while revenue climbed 36.3% to ₹164.62 billion.

Operational revenue reached ₹17,244 crore during the quarter, supported by strong domestic demand and a remarkable 52% increase in exports, which rose to 636,005 vehicles. Latin America and Africa remained key growth markets for the company.

Electric vehicles, including scooters and electric three-wheelers, contributed approximately 30% of Bajaj Auto’s domestic revenue during the quarter, highlighting the growing importance of the EV business.

Manufacturing Expansion Across EV Segments

Beyond electric scooters, India’s Bajaj Auto deepens its manufacturing investments with a broader capacity expansion strategy. The company plans a two-phase production upgrade that will increase overall manufacturing capacity by around 20% to meet rising domestic and export demand.

Bajaj Auto is also expanding electric three-wheeler production capacity by 50%, reinforcing its leadership in that segment while preparing for continued growth in commercial EV adoption.

Competition Intensifies in India’s EV Market

Bajaj Auto’s expansion comes as competition in India’s electric two-wheeler industry continues to intensify. Established manufacturers such as TVS Motor and Hero MotoCorp, along with newer EV-focused companies like Ather Energy, are all increasing investments in new products and manufacturing capabilities.

Despite facing higher commodity, energy, and freight costs caused by global supply disruptions, demand for electric vehicles has remained strong. Domestic two-wheeler sales grew 11% during the quarter, while the broader industry recorded growth of over 20%.

With expanding production, upcoming electric motorcycles, stronger exports, and continued investment in manufacturing, India’s Bajaj Auto deepens its long-term commitment to electric mobility. The company’s comprehensive EV roadmap positions it to compete more aggressively in both domestic and international markets while supporting the ongoing transition toward cleaner transportation.
