India has taken a major step toward cleaner mobility with the Centre installing over 27000 EV charging stations at petrol pumps across the country. As of late 2025, a total of 27,432 charging points are operational, significantly strengthening the nation’s electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem. By integrating charging infrastructure into existing fuel stations, the government aims to reduce range anxiety and make EV usage more practical for everyday travel.
How the Charging Network Was Built?
The rapid expansion of charging facilities has been driven by a mix of government support and public sector investment. Under the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (FAME-II) scheme, 8,932 charging stations were installed at retail fuel outlets. In addition, public sector oil marketing companies (OMCs) independently set up more than 18,500 charging points using their own funds. Together, these efforts have resulted in over 27000 EV charging stations at petrol pumps, creating a dense and accessible network nationwide.

Energy Stations: The Future of Fuel Retail
Beyond standard chargers, OMCs are developing the concept of “Energy Stations” as integrated mobility hubs. Between 2024–25 and 2028–29, around 4,000 such stations are planned along major highways and strategic locations. These hubs offer petrol and diesel alongside alternative fuels such as biofuels, CNG, LNG (where feasible), and EV charging. By November 1, 2025, 1,064 Energy Stations had already been commissioned, marking steady progress toward multi-fuel infrastructure.
Benefits for EV Users and Transport Efficiency
The availability of over 27000 EV charging stations at petrol pumps is expected to boost the adoption of electric cars and two-wheelers by making charging as convenient as refuelling. Drivers can now access charging points at familiar locations, supporting smoother long-distance travel and daily commuting.
Supporting Freight, Biofuels, and Digital Infrastructure
The government has also focused on freight transport through the “APNA GHAR” initiative, which created more than 500 rest areas for truck drivers, improving road safety and generating rural employment. Biofuels saw strong growth, with ethanol blending in petrol averaging 19.24% in ESY 2024–25, delivering foreign exchange savings exceeding ₹1.55 lakh crore and cutting carbon emissions. Advanced biofuels were promoted through the Pradhan Mantri JI-VAN Yojana, with second-generation ethanol plants at Panipat and Numaligarh becoming operational.
To modernise fuel retail, over 90,000 outlets were enabled with digital payments, supported by more than 2.71 lakh POS terminals. Doorstep fuel delivery expanded with 3,200 bowsers, while sanitation facilities were ensured at nearly all stations.
A Cleaner Mobility Roadmap
With over 27000 EV charging stations at petrol pumps, Energy Stations, biofuel expansion, and digital upgrades, India is building a comprehensive, future-ready transport infrastructure that supports sustainability, efficiency, and inclusive growth.
