A Unified Step Towards Smarter EV Payments
India’s electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem is evolving rapidly, and seamless digital payments are becoming just as important as the charging infrastructure itself. To address long-standing payment fragmentation, NPCI Bharat BillPay Ltd. (NBBL), a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), has introduced a dedicated “EV Recharge” category on Bharat Connect. This strategic move, unveiled at the Global Fintech Fest 2025 and operational by January 2026, marks a significant milestone as NBBL enhances the EV Ecosystem by simplifying how EV owners recharge their wallets.

Addressing a Growing Market Need
India’s EV journey has gained strong momentum, with vehicle sales rising from just 50,000 units in 2016 to 2.08 million units in 2024, as highlighted by NITI Aayog. The government’s ambitious goal of achieving 30 percent EV penetration by 2030 further underlines the need for a reliable and user-friendly charging and payment experience. Despite the expansion of public charging infrastructure—29,277 public EV charging stations as of August 2025—users have often faced challenges due to multiple apps and disconnected payment systems. This is where NBBL enhances the EV Ecosystem by offering a unified solution.
Key Features of the EV Recharge Category
The newly launched EV Recharge category allows users to top up multiple EV charging wallets through a single Bharat Connect-enabled interface. Major charging networks such as Tata EZ Charge and Zeon Charging are already supported. Built on an API-driven framework, the system ensures instant transaction confirmations, real-time balance updates, and secure digital records. Users can choose from multiple payment options, including UPI, credit and debit cards, net banking, and digital wallets, ensuring flexibility and ease of use.
Strategic Impact on Green Mobility
By integrating various charging point operators into a single interoperable platform, NBBL enhances the EV Ecosystem through greater transparency, standardization, and discoverability of charging services. This initiative not only reduces friction for EV users but also supports national clean mobility goals by making charging simpler and more accessible. Leveraging Bharat Connect’s robust biller network, NBBL is helping create a consistent and trusted payment experience across the EV value chain.
How EV Owners Can Use the Service?
Using the EV Recharge service is straightforward. Users open any Bharat Connect-enabled application, select the EV Recharge category, choose their charging operator, enter their registered mobile number, and complete the recharge using their preferred payment mode. With this streamlined process, NBBL enhances the EV Ecosystem by turning EV wallet recharges into a quick, hassle-free experience, supporting India’s transition towards sustainable mobility.
