In a decisive step towards sustainable urban mobility, the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation (LMC) has announced an ambitious plan to strengthen the city’s electric vehicle infrastructure. As part of this initiative, LMC plans to install 100 EV charging stations across Ludhiana, addressing a long-standing gap that has challenged the city’s growing EV user base.
Rising EV Adoption Creates Urgent Need
Ludhiana has witnessed a rapid surge in electric vehicle adoption, with more than 60,000 registered EVs currently on the road. This includes two-wheelers, e-rickshaws, and four-wheelers, driven largely by soaring fuel prices and increased environmental awareness. However, the limited availability of charging facilities has often resulted in inconvenience and “range anxiety” for EV owners. Recognising this issue, LMC plans to install 100 EV charging stations to ensure reliable and accessible charging options citywide.
Public-Private Partnership Model Explained
The project will be executed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Under this structure, the selected private company will handle installation, operation, and maintenance of the charging stations. The Municipal Corporation will provide land and necessary approvals, ensuring zero financial burden on civic funds. A senior official confirmed that the proposal is ready to be presented before the Finance and Contract Committee (F&CC) for approval.
Strategic Locations Across the City
A detailed survey will be conducted to identify optimal locations for the charging network. Priority will be given to high-traffic zones and market parking areas. Probable sites include Sarabha Nagar Market, BRS Nagar Market, Model Town Market, arterial roads, and the MC’s multi-storey parking facility near Mata Rani Chowk. The network will feature a mix of slow and fast chargers catering to different vehicle categories. Through this approach, LMC plans to install 100 EV charging stations where demand is highest.
Public Response and Environmental Benefits
Residents have welcomed the move, calling it a practical solution amid rising fuel costs. Many believe that even paid charging will remain economical compared to conventional fuels. The initiative is expected to encourage more citizens to switch to electric vehicles, helping reduce air pollution in this industrial hub.
Part of a Larger Electric Mobility Push
This charging infrastructure rollout aligns with broader green transport efforts, including the reconstruction of the e-bus depot on Hambran Road and the introduction of electric buses under the PM E-Bus Sewa scheme. Together, these developments underline Ludhiana’s commitment to cleaner mobility. Ultimately, LMC plans to install 100 EV charging stations as a cornerstone of its long-term, climate-conscious urban development strategy.
