Hyundai Motor is taking a significant step toward enhancing the electric vehicle (EV) experience in South Korea by expanding its plug-and-charge (PnC) network starting in 2026. This move reflects the company’s commitment to making EV charging more convenient, secure, and user-friendly. The plug-and-charge technology simplifies the entire process by automatically handling authentication and payment once a driver plugs in their vehicle, removing the need for additional apps or payment methods. Currently, Hyundai operates 64 E-pit charging stations across the country. With the expansion project, Hyundai Motor boosts its EV Charging Network by collaborating with 12 domestic charging operators, including prominent names like Chaevi, GS ChargEV, and NICE Infra. By leveraging these partnerships, the company aims to scale its PnC technology significantly, providing seamless access to charging infrastructure for EV owners.
In the first quarter of 2026, Hyundai plans to implement PnC technology at over 1,500 chargers through a partnership with Chaevi and Hyundai Engineering. Later in the year, the company intends to extend PnC to slow chargers, once technical validation is complete. Beyond this, Hyundai is actively working with the South Korean government to ensure a smooth national transition toward a more interconnected and efficient EV infrastructure.
A key aspect of this expansion is the implementation of ISO 15118, a standard that enables secure communication between EVs and chargers for authentication and payment. To further safeguard the process, operators will deploy Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), ensuring robust security in validating transactions. While the initial launch will cover only a fraction of public chargers, it represents a crucial milestone for EV users, setting the stage for a more convenient and secure charging ecosystem.
The success of this initiative depends on active participation from operators, with Chaevi playing a major role in fast-charging deployment. By focusing on interoperability and user convenience, Hyundai Motor boosts its EV Charging Network to meet growing EV demands while enhancing the overall charging experience.
