India’s electric vehicle (EV) market recorded its strongest monthly performance yet in July 2026, with total registrations surging more than 66% year-on-year to around 3.3 lakh units, up from just under 2 lakh units in July 2025. According to Vahan data, the growth was driven by rising fuel prices, a wider range of affordable electric models, expanding dealership networks, and strong consumer confidence. The biggest highlight was that Electric 2-wheelers cross 2 Lakh monthly registrations for the first time, marking a major milestone for the country’s EV transition.
Electric 2-Wheelers Lead India’s EV Growth
The biggest contribution came from the electric two-wheeler segment. Monthly registrations climbed to 204,201 units in July, compared with around 1.95 lakh in June and nearly 1.1 lakh during the same month last year. As Electric 2-wheelers cross 2 Lakh, electric models now account for approximately 11.2% of all two-wheelers registered, up from 10.6% in June and 7.6% a year ago. Average monthly electric two-wheeler registrations have also increased to around 1.7 lakh units in 2026, reflecting stronger consumer acceptance across multiple price segments.
TVS and Bajaj Continue to Dominate the Market
The competitive landscape continues to favor established manufacturers. TVS Motor retained its leadership with 55,465 registrations, supported by strong demand for the iQube range. Bajaj Auto remained in second place with 45,562 Chetak registrations, further narrowing the gap with the market leader.
Ather Energy secured the third position despite registrations easing slightly to 30,317 units. Hero MotoCorp strengthened its presence with 22,883 Vida registrations, while Ola Electric continued to lose momentum, with registrations declining to 14,102 units amid growing competition and shifting consumer preferences. Greaves Electric Mobility also emerged as a strong performer, registering 9,590 units with impressive year-on-year growth.
Electric Passenger Vehicle Sales Stay Strong
While electric passenger vehicle registrations softened slightly after a record June, the segment remained significantly stronger than last year. Registrations stood at 32,660 units in July compared to 33,441 units in June. Tata Motors continued to lead the electric car and SUV segment with 13,568 registrations, reinforcing its dominant position in India’s passenger EV market.

Industry experts believe the current momentum reflects a structural shift rather than temporary demand. As Electric 2-wheelers cross 2 Lakh, buyers are increasingly attracted by lower ownership costs, reduced running expenses, improved charging infrastructure, broader dealership networks, and a wider product portfolio. Demand also received a boost from customers purchasing before the July 31 PM E-Drive subsidy deadline.
The industry reached the 10 lakh electric two-wheeler registration milestone in just seven months of 2026, six months faster than in 2025. With Electric 2-wheelers crossing 2 Lakh becoming a reality and EV adoption accelerating across India, the market is now on track to approach 2 million electric two-wheeler registrations by the end of 2026, highlighting the country’s rapidly expanding electric mobility ecosystem.
