BYD has become one of the world’s fastest-growing electric vehicle manufacturers, and its appetite for growth shows no signs of slowing. In November alone, the Chinese automaker sold over 480,000 new energy vehicles. While many brands would consider this a milestone, BYD is pushing further by expanding one of its most successful lineups. BYD prepares larger Yuan Max SUV as the next step to boost sales and keep the Yuan series competitive.

Why BYD needs a bigger Yuan?

The Yuan series has been a consistent bestseller for BYD, thanks to its strong value-for-money positioning. Models like the Yuan Up and Yuan Plus have attracted buyers with affordable pricing and practical electric performance. However, recent sales data show a mild slowdown. In November, the Yuan lineup sold 47,835 units, marking a year-on-year decline of just over 15 percent and a slight dip from October. Even popular EVs can face cooling demand, and BYD prepares a larger Yuan Max SUV to counter this trend by offering more space and versatility.

Spy shots reveal a familiar yet upgraded design

Recent spy images from China show the upcoming SUV wrapped in blue camouflage. Despite efforts to hide its identity, key details are visible. The front design closely resembles the Yuan Plus, while the semi-flush door handles hint at a modern, aerodynamic approach. Inside, the steering wheel proudly displays the Chinese character “元” (Yuan), confirming its place within the Yuan family. These early signs suggest that BYD aims to balance familiarity with meaningful upgrades.

Bigger size, broader appeal

Size matters in today’s SUV market, and this is where the new model stands out. The Yuan Max is expected to be similar in size to the BYD Song Pro, measuring around 4.73 meters in length with a 2.71-meter wheelbase. This is significantly larger than the current Yuan Plus, which is about 4.45 meters long. Positioned between the Yuan Plus and the larger Song Plus, the new SUV could even offer a seven-seat layout, filling a crucial gap in BYD’s lineup. Once again, BYD prepares a larger Yuan Max SUV to attract families seeking space without sacrificing affordability.

Pricing, technology, and launch expectations

Affordability remains central to the Yuan brand, with current prices ranging from RMB 74,800 to RMB 147,800. The Yuan Max is expected to follow this value-driven strategy while featuring BYD’s Blade Battery and advanced e-platform 3.0. The model may launch in late Q2 2026 and play a key role in BYD’s global expansion, supporting overseas sales targets of up to 1.6 million units in 2026. Clearly, BYD prepares a larger Yuan Max SUV not just as a new model, but as a strategic move to sustain growth in an increasingly competitive EV market.
