Ford has taken a major step toward expanding its affordable electric vehicle lineup, as Ford’s new electric truck was spied in California for Public testing. The heavily camouflaged prototype was recently seen driving on public roads in Long Beach, California, marking the first confirmed sighting of the company’s highly anticipated compact electric pickup.

The new model is expected to become the first vehicle built on Ford’s next-generation Universal Electric Vehicle Platform, a dedicated architecture designed to lower production costs, improve efficiency, and help the automaker compete more effectively in the rapidly growing global EV market.

Compact Size, Big Practicality

Despite being a pickup truck, the prototype appears significantly smaller than the Ford F-150 and even smaller than the current Maverick. Industry observers estimate its dimensions are closer to the early-2000s Ford Ranger, giving it a compact footprint ideal for urban and suburban drivers.

However, Ford claims the vehicle will offer more passenger room than the Toyota RAV4. The truck is expected to feature a four-door SuperCrew cabin, a spacious second row, a deep cargo bed, and additional storage space through a front trunk.

The front fascia appears intentionally disguised, while hidden rear bodywork may conceal advanced aerodynamic components such as roof spoilers and airflow-management features. These enhancements are expected to maximize driving range and overall efficiency.

New Platform and Advanced Manufacturing

The upcoming electric pickup will debut Ford’s innovative Universal EV Platform. One of its biggest breakthroughs is the use of megacasting technology, which dramatically reduces manufacturing complexity. Reports suggest the rear structure has been simplified from 146 separate parts to just two large aluminum castings.

The vehicle is also expected to utilize cost-effective and durable lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery packs. These structural batteries not only lower costs but also help maximize cabin space.

Expected Price, Performance, and Launch Timeline

Ford aims to price the truck at approximately $30,000, making it one of the most affordable electric pickups in the market. Entry-level versions are expected to deliver around 300 miles of range and accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under five seconds.

Production is expected to take place at Ford’s Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky, with order books likely opening in late 2026 and a full market launch anticipated in 2027.
