Nio’s EV Battery-Swap Tech Crosses 1 Million Weekly Swaps During Holiday Surge

Chinese electric vehicle maker Nio has reached a major milestone, with Nio’s EV battery swap tech completing over 1.03 million battery swaps in a single week. This achievement came during China’s busy May Day holiday travel period, from April 30 to May 6, when EV usage surged across the country.

A Record-Breaking Week for Battery Swapping

During this high-traffic period, Nio’s EV battery swap tech handled 1,031,469 swap operations, showcasing the scalability of its infrastructure. The busiest day was May 1, when the company completed an impressive 170,585 swaps in just 24 hours. On average, the network processed around 147,350 swaps daily, reflecting consistent and heavy usage.

These operations were supported by a vast network of 3,839 active battery swap stations spread across China. Each station handled roughly 40 swaps per day, ensuring quick and efficient service for EV drivers.

Powering Millions: Energy and Market Impact

Beyond operational numbers, Nio’s EV battery-swap tech also delivered significant energy output. During the holiday window, the company supplied approximately 15.4 gigawatt-hours of electricity, accounting for about 16.3% of all EV energy consumption in China during that time.

This highlights not just the popularity of the service, but also its growing role in the country’s broader EV ecosystem.

Multi-Brand Integration and Growing Ecosystem

Nio’s battery swap network is not limited to its primary brand. It also supports vehicles from its family-oriented sub-brand Onvo, expanding accessibility to a wider audience. However, its smaller sub-brand Firefly has yet to be integrated into the system.

Interestingly, Nio’s charging infrastructure also serves competitors, with 87% of charging station usage coming from non-Nio EVs, reflecting its open ecosystem approach.

A Long Journey for Battery Swap Technology

Battery swapping has a complex history. Automakers like Renault experimented with the concept in 2011 through the Fluence Z.E., while Tesla briefly explored the idea before abandoning it due to limited demand. Unlike its predecessors, Nio has continued refining the model and scaling it successfully.

Future Expansion Plans

The recent milestone also signals rapid growth. Nio recorded its 100 millionth cumulative battery swap in February 2026, and it is now preparing for further expansion. The company plans to deploy at least 1,000 fifth-generation swap stations this year, designed to support larger vehicles and future EV technologies.

Meanwhile, Onvo alone operates 2,491 stations, with a target to exceed 3,300 stations by year-end, in addition to Nio’s existing network.
