The Samruddhi Mahamarg, one of India’s newest high-speed expressways, is set to undergo a major green transformation with MERL planning 38 EV charging stations across its 701 km stretch. Mahasamruddhi Renewable Energy Limited (MREL), a subsidiary of MSRDC, is not only building widespread EV infrastructure but also integrating renewable energy generation to make the Mumbai–Nagpur Expressway a model of clean mobility.
Solar-Powered Charging for a Pollution-Free Corridor
With nearly 40,000 vehicles using the expressway daily, reliable charging infrastructure has become essential. To meet this demand sustainably, MERL is planning 38 EV charging stations, which also includes establishing 44 MW of ground-mounted solar power plants along the route. These units will supply clean energy directly to EV stations, ensuring a fully pollution-free ecosystem.
MSRDC has already commissioned 9 MW of solar capacity, with installations at:
- Karanja (Lad), Washim—3 MW
- Mehkar, Buldhana—2 MW
These photovoltaic units currently operate through rooftop setups at interchange toll plazas. The long-term vision includes expanding total solar generation to 204 MW, making Samruddhi Mahamarg India’s first expressway with integrated large-scale solar energy.
New Solar Sites Identified Across Vidarbha
As part of the renewable energy initiative, most solar units will be located in Vidarbha due to its high number of sunny days. Identified sites include:
- Butibori (IC-2): 2 MW
- Arvi Pulgaon (IC-5): 10 MW
- Malegaon Jahangir (IC-10): 32 MW
Power evacuation will be facilitated through multiple substations such as Gumgaon, Rohana, Pulgaon, Karanja Lad, and Malegaon.
EV Charging Infra Integrated into 21 Way-Side Amenities
As part of the broader development plan, MERL is planning 38 EV charging stations to ensure each facility is integrated into the 21 Way-Side Amenities (WSA) placed every 40–50 km. Under new policies, 25% of parking at WSAs will be dedicated to EVs, supporting rising electric vehicle adoption.
Some operational charging points currently available include:
- Sawangi Interchange—60 kW charging, open 24/7
- Karanja (Lad) – Solar-powered station
- Mehkar—Solar-powered charging
- Anantpur & Dhanvantari Petroleum – Additional charging options
