Mercedes-Benz has strengthened its electric vehicle strategy in India by launching local assembly of the GLC 400 4MATIC at its Chakan manufacturing facility near Pune, Maharashtra. The luxury electric SUV debuted on November 4, 2026, at an introductory ex-showroom price of ₹78.50 lakh, bringing it remarkably close to the combustion-powered GLC. As Mercedes-Benz starts GLC Electric Assembly in India, the company is positioning local production as a route to competitive pricing and faster deliveries.

Demand has already exceeded expectations, with more than 1,000 bookings and the production allocation sold out through March 2027, signalling strong interest among luxury EV buyers.

What Has Mercedes-Benz Announced?

Mercedes-Benz starts GLC Electric Assembly in India through imported completely knocked-down (CKD) kits at Chakan. The GLC 400 4MATIC costs ₹78.50 lakh ex-showroom, offers up to 711 km of claimed WLTP range, and is scheduled for initial deliveries around Diwali in November 2026. Autocar Professional+1

Chakan Production: A Major Local Manufacturing Milestone

Assembly began on November 4 using a flexible production line shared with combustion vehicles. Imported CKD components are assembled in Pune rather than manufactured entirely in India.

The rollout follows the model’s international debut and marks another step in Mercedes-Benz’s local EV manufacturing plans. Chakan can now handle multiple powertrain technologies on a shared assembly line.

Why Its ₹78.50 Lakh Price Matters

Mercedes-Benz starts the GLC Electric Assembly in India at just ₹1.50 lakh above the combustion GLC’s ₹77 lakh starting price. India’s lower 5% GST on electric vehicles, compared with higher taxation on large combustion SUVs, helps narrow the difference. Registration, insurance and applicable taxes remain additional.

Bookings, Charging Benefits and Future Investment

Mercedes-Benz India CEO Santosh Iyer confirmed over 1,000 bookings and said orders have exhausted allocation through March 2027. The company is seeking additional assembly kits to reduce waiting periods. Global leadership highlighted the GLC nameplate’s established Indian customer base, with more than 22,000 combustion GLCs sold over the previous decade.

Eligible buyers may choose 2,500 kWh of MB. CHARGE Public credits, valid for 24 months, instead of a complimentary home AC wallbox. The network covers more than 22,000 charging points nationwide.

Mercedes-Benz has also committed another ₹200 crore toward Indian operations, taking cumulative investment to ₹3,200 crore, including manufacturing upgrades and digitalization. The company has indicated further electric launches are planned. Deccan Chronicle+1

The headline “Mercedes-Benz Starts GLC Electric Assembly in india” captures a broader shift: local assembly, competitive pricing and substantial advance demand could accelerate luxury EV adoption.
