Enphase Energy has expanded smart-meter compatibility for its Enphase IQ EV Charger 2 across seven European markets. The charger can now integrate with existing smart meter products in Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, and the UK.
Supported equipment includes systems such as the DSMR smart meter in the Netherlands. By working with meters already installed, the upgraded charger can respond to household electricity demand without requiring homeowners to replace metering infrastructure.
How Dynamic Load Balancing Works
The Enphase IQ EV Charger 2 offers dynamic load balancing, which adjusts charging power as household electricity consumption changes. If appliances draw more energy, the charger can reduce the power to the vehicle. This helps prevent overloads while ensuring the EV charges within the available capacity of the home.
The system also supports green charging, allowing an electric vehicle to use surplus electricity generated by solar panels. For households with solar installations, this could increase self-consumption of renewable energy and reduce dependence on grid electricity for driving.
Part of a Connected Home Energy Ecosystem
Enphase launched the charger last year in the US, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. It delivers up to 19.2kW and is designed for home charging. The company expects to expand availability into more markets.
Although Enphase does not manufacture solar modules, it produces microinverters that play a crucial role in solar systems. Its launch of the IQ9N Microinverter, alongside charger compatibility, highlights its strategy of connecting solar generation, battery storage, EV charging, and energy management within one ecosystem.
Jayant Somani, Enphase senior vice president of digital business, said the charger is designed to work with a homeowner’s current energy setup and expand over time. Customers can begin with smart EV charging, use solar energy whenever available, and later add Enphase batteries and energy-management products.
Integrated Charging Gains Momentum
The Enphase IQ EV Charger 2 arrives as integrated energy hubs gain global attention. Victoria activated its first community battery and EV charging hub in May, while Sigenergy and Sunollo announced integrated chargers, solar PV, and battery storage plans in Singapore in June.
UK Networks Services has also requested proposals for 22 EV-integrated battery energy storage projects, supporting plans for integrated charging systems across 160 locations. These developments show how EV charging is rapidly becoming a central part of smarter, cleaner, and more flexible energy networks.
